When considering a graphic design workstation it is only natural to consider the graphic processing unit as a crucial component to your machine. Let us be honest the word "graphics" is in the name of the component, this MUST be important! Or is it?

In this video/article I want to talk about graphics processing units (or GPUs) for graphic designers and their workstations.

First, here are a few questions I received on this topic:
- What is the best graphics processing unit for graphic design?
- Are graphics processing units important for design computers?
- Do I need a good GPU for my graphic design computer?
- How important are GPUs in design computers?
- is GPU important in graphic design computer?

All of these questions stem from an interest to purchase the fastest computer or laptop for the budget of the inquiry. The question still stands, "how important is a GPU for a graphic designers".

First let's look at what a graphics processor does within your computer...

A graphics card is a set of computer chips on a circuit board roughly the size of an index card. The chips are dedicated to a single task: to take video data from the computers processor and convert it to signals for your monitor.

There is a small graphics processor within a computer called a CPU (Computer Processing Unit), but the CPU can only handle so much information and it would begin to slow down the entire operation of the computer if it was called on to produce graphics for the computer.

Why is this so?

The way a GPU is constructed is different than a CPU. A CPU only has 2-6 cores with lots of memory that can handle a few software tasks at a time. Whereas the GPU is composed of hundreds of cores that can handle thousands of tasks simultaneously.

The GPU is working on thousands of little tasks in order to understand, translate, and then render information to the monitor of a computer.

Ok, now what does all of this mean for graphic design? Is it necessary for graphic designers to have BEAST graphics processing units for a fast workstation?

No. The graphics processing units handle rendering graphics. When you are working within Indesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator you are working with still graphics and images. There are minimal moving images to understand, translate, or render at a large scale, so the GPU is not called upon for this task. An advanced CPU, the i7 for instance, will have plenty of power. Paired up with 16GB of RAM and a Solid State Hard Drive you will be well equipped as a graphic designer.

However I will note that if you plan on getting into any Motion Graphic or Video editing you will want to highly consider a well spec'd GPU. This will call upon you computer to understand, translate, and render graphics.

If we do 3D modelling, do graphic card need? In clip studio software, there's fuction which helped in making background or character more acurate which using 3D modelling, so we need it?

1. Graphic Design
2. Web Design
3. Programming
This three are my primary uses of my laptop. I don't play games on my laptop.
My laptop is Asus vivobook with
8th Gen Core i5
8GB of ram
1TB HDD with 8GB SSHD (Not SDD)
But the GPU is Geforce MX130 2GB

There are extra slots for Ram and SDD. If I add more ram and an SDD. Will I go fine with my works??

thank you for making this very useful video. this video tell me some opinions about laptop from a true designer.

i am choosing a new laptop for my architecture lesson. could you please give me some opinions? i am currently using a 2016 13 macbook pro with touchbar(dual-core cpu, 8g ram). when i am painting in adobe indesign and adobe illustrator, my computer will be very slow. but rhino is ok.

i would like to choose a 16 or 32 gb ram and i7 processor laptop. but i confused by the graphic card problem. i have read the system requirement of those applications i mentioned above. they recommended 4gb VRAM, should i upgrade to 6gb or higher? what does the performance of gtx1050ti in adobe illustrator and indesign? thank you very much.

Another great video as usual. I use Nvidia GT 730. What GPU/GPUs do you use Mr. Ben Kaiser?

Hi, I'm currently studying Graphic Design. My school is advising that we get a video card (I had no idea what that was tbh) I have a MacBookPro 13" retina with the display tool bar to be specific. What video card would you recommend for me to get?

I need to get myself a new laptop for uni where I'll be studying graphic design. I have a found a great 4k laptop with all the specs I need but it comes with a low end GPU. Should I consider installing a higher end graphics card or will the NVIDIA GeForce MX130 do the job?

Sorry to ask since i can't sure about this, but does 2D animating is considered as motion graphic and affected much by GPU?
i mean like: Flash, Spine, 2Dlive, etc. not 3D stuff or video editing, but just pure 2D animating.
