Hashimoto's Symptoms That Most Patients Miss

What are the symptoms of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis? Usually, they correspond with hypothyroidism but that's not always the case! Because Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease you may experience symptoms of hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or no symptoms at all, depending on how advanced your disease is. In addition to thyroid symptoms, you may also experience symptoms related to your immune system.

When you combine all of these factors together, diagnosing Hashimoto's based on symptoms alone isn't a good idea. And if you are a patient with Hashimoto's, you should be aware of all of these various types of symptoms because it can better help you to understand what to expect with your disease.

Symptoms of Hashimoto's may include:

The symptoms of hypothyroidism like fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, swelling of the thyroid gland, hoarseness, menstrual irregularities, and cold intolerance.

The symptoms of hyperthyroidism like weight loss, fatigue, hair loss, diarrhea, tremors, heart palpitations, anxiety, and heat intolerance.

And symptoms associated with your immune system like headaches, hives, rashes, and other flu-like symptoms.

I was 47 before Hashimotos was finally diagnosed. If I didn't feel the huge lump bulging from my throat, I may have not been tested then. I lost my colon, ovaries, had a enterocele, recovered blatter tack, yet no one checked my thyroid despite my few and far between menstrual cycles since age 11. I am now 62. I'm still undiagnosed with other chronic problems and although medication has corrected my numbers, I am miserable. This is a most under emphasized illness and I've been mistreated as well as misdiagnosed with other problems to the point that I no longer bother to try to find out what's going on. I just try to remain comfortable and grateful but no more running after doctors who can't be bothered to dig a bit deeper. If you don't feel better, it's your fault because your test say your fine, besides the many that don't. A truly misdiagnosed condition on so many levels.

I can't tell you how grateful I am that you talk about the hyper phases. I do so much digging and research and nearly nobody ever acknowledges the awful swings back and forth that can happen. I used to have terrible anxiety/panic attacks when in hyper phases and nobody ever acknowledged it or seemed to care.

I had major fatigue every afternoon at about 3pm for as long as I can remember. My skin was also always a bit dry. The only symptom I really noticed was a large amount of weight gain I couldn't lose. Now that my thyroid is being properly medicated (*not* with just T4) all of my lifelong symptoms are resolving.

Dr. Childs what about pain and inflammation? Sometimes caused by stress, not enough sleep or eating wrong foods. I also have adrneal fatigue. So that may cause it.
Thank you so much for making these videos. I hope more people find you because I think a LOT of people have Hashimoto but for some reason doctors don't check.

Dr Westin!!!! My TPO is 900. My TSH is 0.9 my free t4 t3 t4 and reverse t3 are all normal. My TSI is normal. My thyroglobulin are high. My endocrinologist says he cannot put me on any medication. However I have all the symptoms of hypothyroid. Hanging 40 lb and I can't lose and the outside of my eyebrows have fallen out my hair is thinning. And I developed lichen simplex chronicus on my legs and break out in hives. I've also been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and I know that is secondary to my hashimoto's. I also had the gastric sleeve surgery only to lose 14 lbs. What should I do doctor?!?!? It's been six years and im miserable. I tried functional medicine doctors and I always end up running out of money because they do all these tests and no treatment.. its sometimes almost $400 per visit

how to treat when you have both autoimmune Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis coexisting. Simultaneous occurrence of Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis can result in clinical masking of one disorder by the other and confusing symptoms.

Doctor can you please talk on hyperthyroidism? What to do when you have taken medication for a long time and you are now at the euthyroid level. How do you know when to stop taking ur medications? I stopped taking medications for a month and all the symptoms came back after taking them for 2 years.

So I just had some lab tests because I've been experiencing symptoms. I have gained 40lbs in 2 years. I went from 290lbs to 165lbs, and I'm gaining weight again. I have PCOS, and my TSH level has always been over 2.5 (which I now understand is subclinical hypothyroidism). However, I live in the UK and the only thing I receive from them is "lose weight", but how?? in one year I've gone from 3.5 to 4.3, alongside my prolactin my ferritin, as well as my glucose (insulin resistance) are borderline. This is a clear symptom even if they are in the "normal range" that something is not working. I take a number of supplements, such as Vitamin D, Omega 3, 5htp, L-Tyrosine, myo inositol, glutamine, ashwagandha, Berberine, probiotics, zinc, selenium, NAC, etc.... and yet my GP won't refer me to an endocrinologist. I'm really frustrated, I train, I walk a lot especially in the morning (while fasting), yet I'm not losing weight. I feel like nothing is working, I've done keto, paleo, lo GI, low fodmap, I've literally tried everything... I sometimes don't even feel like getting up from bed.

Had no idea I had hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s. Went to many doctors and an allergist to look into severe chronic urticaria (hives - really REALLY bad hives). Referred to an Integrative Medicine doctor who had it figured out immediately. But I did have a lot of other symptoms too that turned out to match the Hashimoto’s symptoms.

I have all those symptoms therefore I have Hashimotos. My TSH levels keep ticking up every time I have labs done. The T4 and T3 levels dip then keep bouncing to normal. I’m past baring children and keep getting asked could you be pregnant? Nope. It’s been 3 years since my last pregnancy and those TSH levels have leveled since then. Doc just keeps uping the dose and I’m still having the same issues.

Can internal tingling and nueropothy be caused by hashimotos? 69 yr old woman diagnosed oct 2023.
Dr said ive had hashi for yrs but it has gone undiagnosed because my thyroid blood tests were not in bad range. Started thyroid meds at 25 for three months, now at 50 and not feeling great.

@Dr.WestinChilds i had my TPO test done and the results say That TPO is 23 ( which should be less than 9) my result is positive and thyroglobulin antibodies which is 22.9 which shows that my result is negative. So my TPO test is positive and thyroglobulin is negative. does this mean I still have Hashimoto?. I am confused about what i should do. another kind of pain i have is in my foot and thumb.

I have both hypo and hyper and it's driving me crazy. How to fix it or try to get it straight en out. Right now all my thyroid test has been all over the board and it is very exhausting.

I believe I have had it since at least my teen years. Looking back there were signs, but like I asked my husband when it is all you've ever known how do you know it's not normal. But I believe my levels were going back and forth hyper and hypo so, it seemed like nothing. That said my Endo said that those hypo and hyper fluxes is normal and that once you are on meds you will never been the same (what we have is what we are going to get) because those ups and downs that are supposed to be there can not be duplicated with meds. He had me confused.

On a side note: about getting a full hormone panel done, I have found none of the labs in my area do anything more than estrogen, progesterone, diabetes, and thyroid in women. Looking at leptin, cortisol, ect. Would love a suggestion? Thanks.

Always been thin and have virtually none of the symptoms mentioned, never constipation, in fact the opposite (stomach issues maybe?) I have antibodies that have gotten very low recently (22). Always eaten pretty healthfully. I wonder if I really have Hashimoto's. I do have a few small thyroid nodules.
