That simple puzzle will be 3 sessions, minimum.

Players are always spending way too much time in trivial locations 😭

My favorite is when players start 10 new quests in the tavern that the dm now has to ad lib

And they still managed to have two separate combat encounters during that session.

I’ve also had the reverse of this. Where I plan all that and then the players blitz it all and I’m left improving the back half of the session.

Goodness that is a DM mood if I evet saw one, players WILL find a way

Or you're me and the players somehow accidently discover things you planned for 4 sessions from now and are one more accident from discovering your final boss

I love when my players spend too much time on a random task they assigned themselves. It helps me with my improv skills and they told me that random stuff like that is their favorite parts of a session. So, its a win-win.

The other end of it is: you’re an hour into the session, pizza hasn’t even arrived yet, and the evil wizard is lying dead on the cold stones of his tower.
So now you’ve got to improve for the next three hours and it ends up being the most memorable time for you and your players—though the canon lore gets a little… fuzzy

My group has spent the last three sessions in one cave that I threw in expecting to take about an hour of play time 😅 they enjoyed the atmosphere

Add an extra session if there's a warlock in the party, they're always up to something that creates a tangent side quest.

This is actually the most relatable DM short I’ve seen.

Our group when I announced that my lvl 4 sorcerer needs armor now that he can wear some. Spent the whole session shopping.

I WAS running a mini campaign cause out DM was doing military stuff for a few weeks. It was supposed to be 3 sessions, 2 chapters per session.

We are on session 5, chapter 2 is about to end and the DM has come back and even made a god damn character for the campaign and is joining in now.

Hahaha. My first DM threw the notebook of plans out the door after I started playing. My random decision making gave him plenty to work with for the 3 years we gamed.

Last session my players spent two and a half hours in a room solving a single puzzle I adapted from a kid's book. It's amazing how many sessions I can get out of simply overprepping with 2 missions.

One of my groups has done that! So, not long before I joined the groups, I'd listen in on sessions. One session, they spent the entire time covering the first 4 hours of the morning. Nothing else, just early morning.

It was still great to listen to, and we all laugh about it to this day.

Each thing listed is basically a session in and of itself

Brings back memories, in CoS campaign, the road from Borovia to Vallaki took us 5 sessions because we were constantly talking and dramatising situations. Borovia took us 4 sessions.
