They're both 'gelato'; that is just a word for ice cream in Italian. One is just cheaper and the other one is more expensive and better

True, also.
"Fake gelato" is still great and better than most gelati/ice cream outside the country lol. A kinder bueno gelato is great to have sometimes 😅

.... We have regulations here in Italy, you know? We can't sell food that has not been properly conserved or that is past or the same day of its expiring date.
Also: all food needs to be stored in containers that are either of food graded plastic or food graded stainless steel, both with a mandatory lid.
Whatever ice cream you find, if you like the flavour, just don't be picky because it does not have a lid while exposed for customers. A lot of places leave it like that so you can see the flavour, because maybe you can't understand the flavour by just reading the name.
Those with the lid on are just pretentious.
In my city, there are at least three ice cream shops out of five that make ice cream by themselves and have it exposed like the "fake" one.

EDIT: Thanks for suggesting me the right name for the shop ✨

I am Italian, guys… you are right about the second one tasting better but they are both “gelato”. It literally means ice cream. There is no such thing as fake gelato… it’s just that most store bought gelato is made with powder flavor instead of using expensive ingredients like in the fancy gelaterie. If you are visiting Italy and see a “La Romana” (an ice cream place) in the city try it out cause it’s the best one in my opinion. You should stay away from big puffy ice cream displays cause they aren’t really the best ones, that isn’t artisanal gelato. I hope this make sense, it’s hard to translate

The thing about gelato served in stainless steel tubs being the best is not always true. I used to work for a popular chain that have those and they were not entirely fresh and they don't even respect the rules for defrosting the pre-made packs of the partially made gelato (they added the "milk" or "cream" part in site) atleast in the store where I worked. And for the ones that don't sell, they get stored for different days, so they're not fresh.
You can find gelato being sold in open containers that are fresh and really good.
My favourite ones are always stored in open containers (an example is Neve di Latte, their gelato is really good) and it makes it easier to see the quality of the gelato by color, look etc. The only exemption for me is La Romana that has those stainless steel containers, their caramello salato is one of my all time favourite flavors next of course to pistacchio.

People when they realize gelato just means “ice-cream”:

When I was in Italy, all the gelato places I was “out” like that, never saw any with lids. I was a kid, but I have to say that all of it was really good and definitely tasted distinct from American ice cream. I don’t think having the ice cream “out” means it’s been sitting out for days, it’s just a fun way to display the flavor.

Gelato means ice cream, it literally means frozen, and same thing in Spanish it’s helado, but some Spanish speakers also call ice cream snow “nieve”

As an italian
Gelato means "ice cream"
You will hear gelato being used for store bought ones

The "real gelato" is just more expensive and tastes better
The "fake gelato" still tastes good

Went to one in DC and I’ve never seen ice cream that stretchy. The guy was so nice too.

Not true, some of the best gelato is served in the first way, you recognise the real gelato artigianale by the taste. In my city there is a gelateria that won the prize for the best gelateria in Italy a few times and doesn’t serve gelato in steel tubes, usually that are tourist traps, the further north you go in Italy, less artisanal the ice cream is.

How it's served doesn't tell you how it's made. Just ignore this video.

I learned this 20 years ago from a Gelato maker who makes everything from scratch everyday and it was life changing.

That’s not true I lived in Italy since I was born and the metal tin concealed ones are the same thing just different presentation. From my personal experience the metal thin ones use “latte in polvere” which is milk powder as opposed to actual milk to make the gelato hence why that grainy texture and after taste

There are even some gelato places on the Top 50 Gelaterias in Italy list that are fake. Long live #49 - Sike in Milazzo, Sicily has the best gelato.
