When an American says something taste artificial, you know it’s bad

There's a viral video of an Italian tour guide explaining the signs of bad gelato. #1 Stacked gelato (as seen in this video) indicates it was whipped and therefore is full of air. #2 Bright colors (as seen in this video) indicates artificial colors and syrups for flavor. #3 When it's "posed" to be pretty and visually appealing (as seen in this video) meaning they care more about the look than the quality.

I saw a video a while back about this. They put in a ton of additives when in reality pistachio Gelato shouldn't be green but more of a grey. Something along those lines

How can someone mess up gelato? And in Italy too? That sounds unreal!

Never...ever...get gelato from a shop where it's stacked up like that. The best shops have everything covered.

When I was in Italy I went to that exact ice cream shop and ordered the Ferraro rochet and it was honestly the greatest ice cream I have ever tasted

When I visited Italy, our tour guide who has born and raised in Florence told us that if you can see the gelato, then it is not authentic. To keep the gelato at its optimal temperature condition, the containers should be covered with a lid and surrounded by ice (or just have the environment really cold). So every time we saw stands with mountains of gelato we knew it wasn’t going to be good and only bought from places with covered gelato. All of them were really delicious 😋

You can always taste the wooden spoon more than the actual ice cream 😂

Hmm, I wonder why literally all of the flavors are UNTOUCHED 💀

Pro tip: the first thing you have to look if you want more natural flavour is the color of pistacchio gelato because if it's bright green it's full of artificial things.

tbh venice as a whole is a tourist trap. they literally serve chicken parm there just to please the tourists. the best food (and best priced) is in the smaller towns with very few tourists and they’re always sm more fun to explore and spend the day.

A good shop that makes their own gelato and is confident in their product will always let you taste-test a tiny bit before you choose a flavor.

I know why it tasted so bad! So a few months ago, I was in Germany when I saw a similar looking shop. I was told that they use air to make the ice cream look big and nice, and the store next door had flat looking ice cream because it was packed down (we went to that place almost everyday lol)

I was just in Italy, and I have to say that there were lots of tourist traps. If your getting gelato always get it in a shop that doesn’t have a ton of advertisement.

As an Italian, here’s some tips:
Don’t trust vegan ice creams, they are often made with already/prepared and ultra processed stuff
Don’t search for the “mountain”. If the gelato is high and it looks too stable even if it forms a sort of peak of a mountain. That’s probably done with hidrogenated fats or low quality ingredients, often pre-made
Don’t trust too bright colors
Search for the “pozzetto”. Elite gelato is kept in a container that looks like a big tub of glue. That allows to keep the gelato at a right temperature, even if you don’t see it.
Don’t trust gelaterie that sell weird flavours like Mars, Oreo and stuff like those…
Search for “gelateria Naturale” instead of “gelateria artigianale”. With the first one you’re sure you’re not being sold pre-made low quality ice cream. You’ll be sold an authentic Gelato
Don’t trust gelaterie with too many flavours and strange creams and toppings to add to your gelato. If it’s made well, you won’t need those
I hope it can help

I feel you, the only time I ever threw an ice cream away was in Italy, a tourist trap next to Trevi fountain. Then I went to an actual shop close by and it was great. Best gelato I had in Italy was in Lucca though.

As an italian, I suggest going to "La romana" which is an ice cream shop chain, but they do all of the flavours and are so good!

Here’s a tip: the best ones always come out if one of those metal containers.
