Stories from the Hidden Worlds - Dharavi, India

Dharavi is a locality in Mumbai, India, considered to be one of the world's largest slums. Dharavi has an area of just over 2.1 square kilometers and a population of about 700,000. Dharavi is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. The Dharavi slum was founded in 1884 during the British colonial era and grew in part because of an expulsion of factories and residents from the peninsular city center by the colonial government, and from the migration of poor rural Indians into urban Mumbai. I live in another major city of India, Bangalore. A new team member joined and he mentioned that he was from Dharawi I was intrigued to know more about him, his father had moved to Dharavi in 70s. He and his sibling are now well educated and working in IT and Finance sector. Now my team member and his family has other apartments in Mumbai, and doing well in life. He still uses his Dharavi home and he also very open about it.
A story of how a common man can improve his situation in life and ensure his next generation does better.

The people featured here must be some of the hardest working people to ever survive living in a slum. Next time I’m having what I consider a difficult day I will reflect on this documentary.

If one has money, one can do anything. Truer words have never been spoken. So sad that this is very true.

I was born in the biggest slum in Kenya and something about the life here is that life is very good that sometimes we don't feel bad as the way people who have never lived slums feels about us.
It actually normal to us.

Admirable and inspiring people, dignified, industrious and creatively ingenious...I loved the way the Hindu guy broke down the English letters of 'God' to mean generation, operation, death...the Trimurti, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva. This place is rich in human and spiritual values...richer than many an outwardly wealthy Western suburb...

Latest studies says that people who live in such dense areas tend to be more affectionate and friendly, in fact instead of saying "hi" or "hello" they greet each other by hugs and kisses. ❤

Biggest issue with Mumbai is lack of land. In the centre of Mumbai, there is Sanjay Gandhi national park that hosts lot of wild animals. You can't create artificial land because coastal area either contains thick mangroves or are nesting ground for turtles. So, Mumbai is expanding in directions it can. People want to stay near the centre but it's not easy to find cheap housing. So, people choose "slum" areas.
