Asia's Largest Slum, India's Richest City | Mumbai: A Tale of Contrasts | Free Documentary

It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?

In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.

Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

I went to India in 1998. The population, slums, traffic, trains, etc. were shocking, to say the least. Seeing it in person will change you forever. My heart breaks for the impoverished people there. Despite all the craziness, most people were very kind. The food was amazing, and there was a lot of beauty, culture, and history to take in. Cheers to the man working on train safety and the leopard caretakers. I hope the big business stops forcing the slums encroachment into leopard territory ! ✌️ ☮️ 🇮🇳

I'd rather do a week in my local jail than spend a week in india!

While it is not the responsibility or obligation of the rich to help the poor, it would be nice if they did. In a country where a wealthy businessman can spend 1 billion to build a mansion and 100 million can be spent on a wedding, the chasm between rich and poor is so wide.

It’s amazing how one person’s opinion of “tackiness” is another person’s view of beautiful home decor (16:39). Just wow…

Those that are rich have an obligation to care for the poor . The Caste System plays a huge roll in how the lower class are treated. 😢

Developers are the same everywhere - here in Europe, they're "clearing" fields and parks, in Mumbay, they're "clearing" homes of the poor :I

15:17 I can feel this man’s emotion and can relate. The only way to progress in life with dignity and be successful is thru hard work, with lots of determination and motivation. You are the only one who can make or break your future. I’m happy for his success.

It's quite funny that in documentaries set in India where Bollywood is mentioned, they often only showcase dance sequences from the film "Bride and Prejudice, " even though it's not a Bollywood movie but rather a British-American production.

I’m fascinated by how you showcased the diverse lifestyles of people in this documentary. For example, the one who started with 100 rupees and the one who inherited a family business. It’s a great reminder that not everyone starts from the same place. People say hard work and hustle create dream lives, but they forget the unequal starting points. The scene where businessmen saw slums as land to profit from, while thousands of people were living, working, and dreaming there, really stayed with me. This was one of the most beautiful documentaries I’ve ever seen. Thank you, so much <3
