WARNING SURROUNDING DEVICE ENCRYPTION: As someone who works in computer repair, I need to express how important it is to also have periodic backups for your data if you enable encryption. With the exception of data-recovery specialists, most computer repair shops CAN NOT access your drives which are encrypted if the system is either dead or if the OS is too corrupt to allow encryption removal from the Windows Recovery tool and If Bitlocker is enabled and you don't have the key, you may as well kiss your data goodbye.

Since Win3.0 I've used and now at 11 this is very helpful for me to keep the computers in the family and friends running smoothly. Great advice.

Thanks!! I haven't come to your page since I pranked a friend with one of your old " fun posts". He actually spent hours trying to increase his wifi speed while I tried to coach him via FaceTime. Anyway... this was very valuable to be reminded of the basics!!

This is a lot of valuable information. Thank you. I had no idea about the start up menu options. A lot of items in the startup I never use. Again, Thank you.

Thanks for the wisdom! -- I'd like to add a tip about the startup list - when you start a new computer for the first time (hopefully without having installed the bloatware) look at the list and write it down so that later on you'll know which startup processes were and were not there originally.
