What mistakes or recommendations can you tell the NIA community about?

I’ve got to be honest I’ve used old rags to clean my dipstick for years and not had any issues, there is such a thing as worrying too much lol

Been changing my oil for 18 years now never had any problems I think I’m doing a pretty good job

The reason people have engine problems isn’t because they use the dirty rag to check the oil and contaminated the oil; it’s because they didn’t change the oil for 10, 000 or 12, 000 or even 18, 000 miles. All fluids (no exceptions) have a finite life and must be replaced at their respective intervals.

If you want all the oil down in the pan before you check or change it why would you start the car and wait for it to drain back down? I check and change my oil before I start the vehicle, guaranteed all the oil has drained in the pan after the car set overnight

My owner's manual says to check the oil when the engine is cold. Most do.

Why start the engine at all? The oil is in the sump after sitting all night

I've been lucky enough to never come across a " mechanic " that's done a oil change incorrectly. It a bread and butter job. Maybe workshop's run different this side of the pond.

When I had a Porsche years ago I would jack up the side of the car opposite the drain hole to get more of the oil out, plus I'd sweep the bottom interior of the oil pan with a telescoping shop magnet to remove any fine iron particles from the bottom of the sump. I would prefill the oil filter and would disable the engine from starting and would crank the engine for a few seconds with the starter to build oil pressure on my gauge after the new oil was in.

If you contaminate engine oil by using a dirty shop rag that is a lot of contamination. You have to have a lot of contamination to affect engine oil as very minute contamination has very little effect.

As a professional auto technician and engine builder I ALWAYS use a clean new towel and always clean around fill and dipstick

I always check my oil in the morning when the engine is cold and I change my oil and filter when the engine is cold so all the dirty oil is still sitting in the oil pan all the dirty oil I don’t want it to get back into circulation and I let it drip until I check everything else 30-40 minutes

Always clean filter gasket area so you don't miss a stuck filter gasket!

My grandfather was an engineer and designed massive pumps for chemical processing for DuPont in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. He taught me how to check and change fluids and what tolerances look like and how they are influenced. He literally wrote books on maintenance procedures. I follow his guide.

When I followed my training as a heavy vehicle mechanic, the teacher told us that when you rebuild or work on a mechanical component, it's like surgery, less pay!😉

Well somewhat agree with you. But any mechanic worth his shirt usually knows how much oil goes into the engine. After you been doing this for a few year ya kinda know by heart the oil capacity.. mechanics don't screw this up. Parts changers and home hobbiests maybe

Back when cars had the flat steel dip sticks I use to shine them up with steel wool before I sell the car so you don't see all the sludge and burnt oil.

It, s a oil change, why scare or confuse people. This video has no redeeming qualities.

I check my oil at the gas station *after* I filled it up. The engine has already been running at operating temperature, it gives me my 5 minute waiting period before checking, and the station usually has clean paper towels at the pumps. I do have shop wipes in the trunk just in case. Best of all, my dipstick's tip is all metal! No loose parts!

Don't forget to polish the oil jug before emptying the contents into the engine.
