People need to understand that oil is cheap enough to change it every 3-5, 000 miles compared to needing an new engine

Nate not to argue are anything but haven't you ever looked at used oil that comes out of most cars???? Cause if you have you wouldn't be worried about a dirty shop towel for crying outloud it's not a triple bypass surgery... It's a damn motor that's ment to drive a car for thousands of miles in which causes FRICTION ON THE INTERNALS!!! WHAT IS WAY WORSE THEN A SPECK OF DIRT THATS ON A RAG

Be sure to tork the drain plug with a cheater bar, and wipe your hands, when you jump straight in the car, with half the yard on your back side.

Yea makes no sense oil filters saying they will go for 20, 000 miles but you need to change the oil roughly every 6, 000. I change mine every 3 to 4 thousand miles regardless of what the manual says.

I mean don't pick up the greasiest wrag you have but use a decently clean on and it's fine. No need to be petty with stuff.

But when you're using the rag you are wiping the sipstick dry and there will be no to very little stuff left on it. The engineers have already thought of this

I have always changed my oil every 3, 000 miles or every 3 months whatever comes first its just such a cheap thing to do why not and you might be able to catch other issues sooner like suspension etc.

At my shop, for synthetic blend we recommend every 3, 000 miles even if it's new or has a turbo because we have seen many oil passages clog up with metal because they go by manufacturers recommendations. Same goes for full synthetic oil except the only difference is we let them go 5, 000 miles

Not changing your oil blows engines
Not a semi clean rag

This is one of the worst cases of OCD I've ever seen.

Really cannot believe that you post this rubbish. Any mechanic knows where the oil goes, where a crankshaft and oil pump is. If you see any one check the oil on a trolley Jack, then they are not mechanics. The rest is standard. Nice to see you can read a book.

Been working on cars since 1986 and you are right on the nail with this call

On my favorite car I even run a quart through with the drain plug open for a bit of a rinse.

Folks argue all this, all the long dang days, over and over. If you followed Nate's advice, you are clear of the legal weasel words of the manufacturers, you ensure cleaner oil in engine, u could prob buy less exp oil, u visit/checkout your car more often in case something's happening. Nit: A clean rag/shop might show the customer that their car matters. All the live long day, folks. LGB! 🇺🇸

My husband keeps a dirty napkin in his work van to check the oil with. I've told him a million times to always use a clean one, but it's not my vehicle so... Not worth pushing. I don't allow him to touch our vehicles unless I'm supervising.

Nate,
Has anyone every did an analysis on the best Gas brand on who has the best additive package? I'd like to see what brand gas has the best cleaning additives, especially in this top tier gasoline. Maybe a future episode of gas brand tournament? Thanks Nate!!

I agree with the rag theory. It's similar to putting a brand new battery in a vechicle and not greasing the terminals. It's all about the chain of custody and being mindful of every step. I couldn't agree with this guy more.

Mechanic's have *No* say in how often people change their oil, that is up to the car owner.

Also note that when changing oil it is not unusual for the indicator stick to show half a quarter less once the engine has been run for 30 seconds. Will check to see how much oil level changes between cold and running temperature plus 5 minutes of settling. I hope not too much!
