Tattoos In The Bible Explained - Misunderstandings About Leviticus 19:28

Does the Bible really forbid tattoos? Did the word tattoo mean something different during the Old Testament period compared to today? Let's investigate! I dug up some cultural context on tattoos from a commentary by scholars Craig S. Keener and John Walton that was printed in the NRSV Cultural Context Study Bible by Zondervan. Their insight could help us answer this common misconception that Christians and others shouldn't get tattoos. Something deeper was behind this law from Leviticus. Ancient tattoos were not just a cool picture or phrase. Instead, they appear to have been a mark or stamp that another god, demon or fallen angel owned a person.

The Greek translation, probably the most accurate aside from original Hebrew, says not to make cuts or “letter marks”. I interpret that as not to make slave marks or names/symbols that address named entities besides Yahweh. Meaning don’t pledge yourself to false gods or principalities.

..."it's probably the scriptures, and don't get tattoos. you were created in HIS image, you are perfect just the way you are, no tattoos needed.

Teachers are held to a high standard. Ending a teaching on such an important topic with "probably ok"
We are a people set apart - our bodies are temples of the living God.
The standard, therefore, for Holy Living is higher, and the sheep of His flock deserve more than "probably ok"

I feel a hypocrite saying this, but I'm quite sure that God DID NOT WANT his children to put tattoos on them. That being said, NO, I don't think God hates those who have inked themselves, nor do I think that others who have inked themselves are greater sinners than me. I personally made the choice of inking myself in the most minimal way possible, but I did it to mark myself as a child of God. I don't regret it as I carry it with faith and loyalty to The All-loving Father of the universe. So, in conclusion, I'm not going to tell people to go out and get one or not. Thats the point of living life under God's name: for he so loves humanity, he gave us free will on how to live our lives. However, every choice one makes in life will always have some form of consequence.

Peace to you all.

It‘s toxic as far as I‘ve heard from my dad and others. My dad who is working in the hospital saw many tattooed people who had cancer/tumors 😢

Be holy. Be set apart from the world. It is not of God to mark your skin for God or for yourself. like when the Lord told Abraham to be circumcised and all the males with him as a sign between them. To be separate from others. To show that we are from the Lord. Today the Lord still tells us to be holy and separate from the world in every thing we do. Leviticus 20:7&26 1 Peter 1 13-16.

Don't mark your skin, that's pretty clear to anyone who wants to understand!

I wanted a tattoo for years of the Archangel Michael defeating the devil, but the Lord told me to wait, once I found a Christian tattoo artist I realized it’s okay to get a tattoo that Glorifies Jesus, not a angel no matter how righteous he may be, after that the Lord told me I was ready

Are Christians usually this snobbish? Guys can't we just be chill and discuss it like civil people?

It’s probably not ok. The scriptures are clear. There is no need for interpretation here - Leviticus 19:28 “nor print any marks upon you.” The focus is on changing your inner person, heart, how you manage with others, etc. I’ve had some people tell me it is cathartic when the cuttings are done. Then also say they suffer with anxiety. It’s like for some relieving stress when the skin is cut. To help with healthier means, try seeing a therapist, work with supplements, work with prescribed medication. These are safer methods.

"Or Tattoo Any Marks Upon You" means Tattoo. Read it again. Its about disfigurement of your body which is the Temple of your Soul

Hmmm probably going to tell ppl it's ok to get a tattoo "probably". I don't think that is a good enough answer to give to ppl, if your wrong...and I'm pretty sure you are, you would be adding or taking away from his word making you a fails teacher ...you know what happens to them.

The bible says to not mark the body not to just do it if it's cute.

Adding a tattoo shows God that what He gave you is not enough.

“Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.Ecclesiastes‬ ‭7‬:‭29‬ ‭

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvellous are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭139‬:‭14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1‬:‭27‬ ‭KJV‬‬

What does for the Dead mean? So if you are not doing it for the dead, then you are ok??

TheDotransporter

Hebrew Bible forbade tattooing. Per Leviticus 19:28, “You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves.

Where can you find in the Bible that it is probably okay?

This is poor study. The context is clearly markings for the dead, you dont even have to read the next verse to know. You arent supposed to mark yourself for the dead via cutting or tattooing. Both were practices of pagan worship at the time
