Can I Get a Tattoo?

Fr. Mike Schmitz gives us some things to consider before getting a tattoo. If we do choose to place permanent marks on our bodies, Fr. Mike advises us to make sure the marks portray values we’ll always identify with and live up to, because tattoos do inevitably say something about who we are.

I have 2 tattoos. A bear and a St. Michael tattoo. I saw the line from Leviticus and it scared me because I got my tattoos before I was very religious and it bothered me because I was feeling closer to God. I prayed about this morning to God for forgiveness. He answered my prayer with this video. Praise be to God!🙏

This man was surely meant to be a priest from the very beginning

I'm not even Catholic, but he made an awful lot of good points that should be considered by everybody if they want to get a tattoo.

If only all priests were as honest, authentic, and charismatic as this guy.

I am an agnostic but I gotta say you are the most down to earth (pun intended) priest I have ever seen, you are also very respectful to other people's beliefs and ways of life. I wish all Christians could be like you :)

As a protestant, I find your explanations are quite articulate and definitely debunks a lot of typical protestant false understandings about Catholicism 👍🏽

I'm an evangelical and I'm against divisions in christianity. Many blessings my brother! You speak like a true man of God.

I am a Greek orthodox, and I am really surprised how these two original Christian faiths ( orthodox and catholic) share around 95% of the religious aspects, which is not underlined regularly

Thanks for treating this subject with such respect and not acting like everyone who is tattooed or wants tattoos is being sinful in the eyes of God. It was really interesting to hear your perspective on this.

Love his energy. The Catholic Church needs this liveliness, assuming he is catholic.

“Not a tattoo but the way I live” this changed my mind of getting a tattoo. Thanks....

Leviticus also states: ‘Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material', so it's mainly Jewish prohibitions and the only reference to tattoos in the Bible. I see these comments: ‘Your body is a Temple’ and ‘You don’t put a bumper sticker on a Bentley.’ Fair enough, but do you in turn fully respect your body through regular exercise, good nutrition, non-smoking or fasting? Having tattoos is not necessarily a sin, but being obese definitely is because it's linked to gluttony and is, essentially, slow suicide. I have four tattoos, the main one being Psalm 91:2 in Latin on my inner forearm. I had these done to stay in faith and, for me, they work, but everything Fr Mike says here is absolutely correct: glorify the Lord by your actions - and try not to have a tattoo, especially if you’re young. Viva Cristo Rey.

The fact that I was talking about getting a tattoo and now youtube pops this up for me?? We are clearly being listened to.
