Walking bass is something SOOO many bass players have difficulty with. But - It's really a lot easier than you think.

Through years of teaching and experimenting with different methods I've come up with my own 'fool proof' method of getting students well on their way to becoming great at creating their own walking bass lines.

In this walking bass lesson I show you how I actually teach my own personal students using this method and why they seem to be able to start creating there own walking bass lines much faster than most other students. That's why this lesson is great not only for student bassists but also bass teachers too. Try using this method with your students and you'll get amazing results - fast.

This is 'Part 1' of this lesson... look out for part 2!!!

Hey guys... wow, lots of questions about the gloves lol! Anyway... the reason for them is have a medical condition called focal dystonia - the gloves keep it under control. So, it's nothing to do with sound at all. Thanks for watching! Scott.

I learned more in 13 minutes of this video than hours of reading online. This series is amazing and should be required for anyone who wants to learn not only jazz bass, but any jazz instrument. Well done Scott.

Hey Scott, I'm a guitarist learning to play bass. I just want to thank you for the incredible quality of your videos. Many musicians consider these things "trade secrets" and therefore it's hard to find a place to learn them. You are a solid bass player and teacher. Thanks for what you do, keep up the good work!

Hey there thanks for watching man! Unfortunately there's no way of getting the volume up once it's on youtube... but If you check any of my latest videos out the volume and audio in general is much much better and... louder. Thanks again for watching! Scott.

From all of what I have read and watched on the net about walking bass so far, this is the best lesson. Thank you so much Scott! God bless you for what you bring for all the young bassists out there including me.

Why do I really enjoy the sound of Scott's voice going "root, fifth, root, third, root, fifth, root, third"

Twelve years after this video was posted, I sent it to my dad (A far more experience bassist that I) as the thing I'm working on now, and he shot back "I've seen that video, great exercise". Amazing the way good tutorials circulate on their own.

You are the man Scott. Thank you for correcting many of my faults after 55 years (on and off) of playing the Bass.

Seeing lesson videos with a lot of views like this always makes me wonder how many of the 1+ million people actually learnt walking bass.

Scott, I think it is amazing that you give up your time to make these videos and you are not looking for any compensation. You also make sure they are available on multiple platforms and they are extremely professional videos. From all the viewers that have learned bass almost entirely from your videos THANKS!!!

Youre one of the first I've seen to teach bass on youtube or even play at all and really pay great attention to sounding the note ON the beat and playing with "flow" or that trance feeling where it just flows nicely. This, in my humble opinion, is what makes simple series of notes on any instrument sound either amateurish or great, it's the timing and rhythm sense. Personally even though I've played piano for many years I didn't start paying attention to timing until lately, and it takes at least a good 30-50 minutes of ghosting over a live concert track until I'm "locked in" to the rhythmic feeling. Some get it quicker, some don't.

This is the first online tutorial I've watched where the tutor places the main emphases on rhythm and pulse. A man after my own heart sir!

Scott...you are like the yogi of bass enlightenment. You just made me look at this like I never imagined. I always have approached this aspect in a more rigid, scale/rhythmic manner. Breaking it down in this way is how great drummers learn complex grooves and rythmic patterns. Never thought of it this way before. Great, great lesson. Thank you.

Good lesson, I have played Bass and Guitar, but my heart is a Bass player because what Scott said about locking with a drummer, playing bass is so much more fun. Some drummers are hard and you have to fight your way through it  and eventually after a lot of work you will get it and other drummers its bam right off the first note you click and its awesome . Bass players know what I am talking about and what's funny nobody in the whole room know its happening other than the bass player and the drummer and sometimes just the bass player it a gig within a gig if you get what I mean. Something you don't get playing guitar.

This is by far the most useful thing anyone ever taught me. Ever. I'm not even talking about music.

Excellent approach to walking bass! Been playing for 40 years and never got far with walking ( did a lot of prog and riff rock and funk) - Reviewing this lesson got me working on walking again. His lessons are top shelf.
