I hear it all the time, “learning some jazz can give your bass playing musical superpowers…” It may not be at the top of your to-do list, especially if you’ve only heard it in Starbucks (back when life felt normal!), but if you want to understand the fretboard then you should tackle some jazz tunes. Maybe you don’t know where to start?

In today’s new video I’m going to show you 4 easy steps to learning your first jazz tune.

I’d love to see more jazz on SBL, especially when explained by Scott or Phil .... please!!!

Somehting that impressed upon me of the chromatic approach, or passing notes, by Carol Kaye was, "Listen, for where you're at in yoru playing, the bass does three things. You root the chord, you keep rhythm, and you announce the chord changes by playing those passing notes. You do those things pretty well. Now, STOP ANALYZING EVERYTHING AND FEEL WHAT TO PLAY!" Yes, she got upset with me.

I have heard this explained before by a ton of other people, and I don't know what it is about you Scott, but when you explain it--it sticks. The workbook is fabulous too.

Thanks Scott! This is really valuable for me as I've never really known where to start with jazz.

A simple but important addition: a walking bass line isn't only harmonic and rhythmic underpinning - it's also a melody.

BEST EXPLANATION EVER!! of how to get started in jazz. Now I can look at a sheet of chords and not look like a "deer in the headlights!" At the very least I will have a starting point and let my ear help with the rest.

I LOVE IT. I love how it actually expands my knowledge about Bass.
But unfortunately, i really don't have a personal bass. I just borrow our Church's bass .. And the only time I could practice is Saturday, only time in the whole week.

Superb lesson: typical Scott where he'll give you some tools, explain how it all works really well and then gets you to do the work so you can apply the learning yourself. For transparency's sake I will say I'm a member of SBL and have also paid for some additional courses but no one else comes near to Scott & team. I'm a bit of a bass newbie really (am an OK guitar player) but loving every second of learning with SBL: yes he can make you work hard but it's all so full of joy.. Do get the free trial if you haven't already, and frankly I'd get a membership if you can afford it: so much great stuff in there. Hope you're all staying safe and enjoying your musical adventures out there.

After watching the introduction video, I believe I will continue with you. I've played classic rock bass for 40 years and now after retiring, I wanted to start learning jazz bass and this may be my ticket. Thanks and I will look forward to the next lesson.

As a novice/ amateur with no professional/ performance aspirations, this lesson is great. Something that starts simple that I can build into to feel good about what I'm dying while just entertaining myself. Thanks Scott!

This was the most fantastic lesson I've ever learned granted I've just started playing bass but I learned more in this one video than I ve picked up trying to figure out the bass for last 6 months. I've gone onto my computer and got the free 14 day tryout and already signed up as a member/Student on Scott's fabulous web site. I'm thrilled to start if the courses or Levels are anything like this video I'm going to be a very Happy Bass player or soon to be Bass player

6 dislikes? Really?! What's to dislike? I wish Scott had been doing this back when I was at the Hartford Conservatory, years ago. Awesome, dude!

I just want to say thank you. I've messed around with playing guitar for years and have dabbled with bass, and never understood chord shapes when written out like they are on these tabs, but the way you explained it, it clicked for me. Thank you for everything!

This is an absolutely fabulous explanation. Thank you!! Now I can stop ducking my guitar player friend who’s been trying to meet up to play jazz standards. 😀
