Higher GS Pay Grades Faster 💰

There are ways you can skip GS grades and get promoted in the federal government before meeting the 12 month time in grade rules. This is usually done when a person accepts a lower level GS grade to "get their foot in the door" and then later a position more aligned with their experience opens up. In this video, I discuss multiple ways you can bypass the time in grade rule in order to get a government job with a higher GS grade. Would you ever consider a federal government job in the future? Let me know down below.

Don't attach SF-50, if it is open to the public or Vet, and you are applying that route. I did not go from GS-6 (Police) to GS-12 (Training Specialist) that way. They only need the time, not the experience. Just put it on your Federal resume, don't lie.

I feel like I made the mistake of applying to GS12 and GS13 grades at the same time and have gotten offers on both, but now just focusing on the GS13 interviews and thankfully one of them did the three reference check, so maybe something soon as the interviews keep coming. I would recommend anyone who hasn't been a federal employee and maybe recently left the military like I did focus more on figuring out if they are getting enough referrals at one grade, such as GS13 and adjusting based on that before they get into a 12/13 battle.

Interesting to see it all play out with a job that closed on Sep 21st requesting an interview now, perhaps their top choice backed out. Guess that's just how it goes.

Hello, Armand. First, I would like to say huge THANK YOU for making these videos. I am watching most of your clips over and over. And more I watch them, I feel like I have a better understanding of the federal job world.

I once applied to a gs 12 position, and HR shut me down in a heartbeat. They didn't even refer me. What documents are you exactly talking about around 3:25 of the video? I emailed the HR explaining I am applying under my previous employment experience, not the current gs pay grade. They gave me an automatic robotic email response saying I don't have enough TIG in previous grade. And that was it.

Exactly what is happening to me. Can't believe I am doing this but I guess some of us don't have control over our destiny. I applied to a position and an agency only on education background. I have no experience in that sector but on other hand I have great amount of skills and can show experience in another sector, like Analyst fields and had a close encounter of getting the big one. Huge grades of difference but I am accepting whatever is coming first. It had taken lots of time and energy of mine, a year. Hopefully I will land the Analyst position in near future. But I don't think it would be wise to just jump agencies without serving time at one place. Say a year or two... Don't know. Thanks as always!

A fellow Marine (who is a GS employee) told me that, as a civilian, it is impossible to apply directly for a GS-12+ opening. Based on what I heard you say, this is not true. It takes a bit more strategy. Man, I wish I had talked to a guy like you the month before my contract ended (many moons ago)!

I'm scrolling for another video but I'll stop to say this.

Yes experience should get you higher GS levels but it's a long and difficult process to do, people don't have that time or knowledge to do that.

Plus with the Federal system being competitive as it is it's only right to take that low GS level.

I'm at a GS5 and only after a stressful now 6 months did I really learn to navigate hire and in different organizations.

A foot in the door is something people do because they have no other way

I'm currently GS-11 Assistant Chief, Center for Development and Civic Engagement with the Department of Veteran Affairs. I would assume that without outside experience to a GS-12, I would be held to 52 weeks TIG in order to move up before the 52 weeks. HR these days aren't the brightest in my eyes as I have had to tell them to review previous Certs to be referred after my experience was on my resume. I dont plan on staying in this position unless I take over as Chief in the next 9 months. I'm trying to move fairly quickly from GS-11 to GS-13. Any thoughts?

Hey how’s it going? I consider myself a unicorn in my base as I went from a GS6 to GS11 in 1yr and 4 months. However, can I do the same from GS11 to GS13? It’s the same series and same job description but I’m looking for answers on doing a two grade jump in case another GS13 position opens in my favor.

After reading the 5CFR on the Time-In-Grade directives, it states the TIG only applies to current nontemporary GS employees. Meaning, if you are currently a GS in a Temporary position, you DO NOT have to meet TIG requirements when applying to a New Permanent position. Am I reading this correctly?

How do you start higher? GS12 requires lower GS position experience

Hi Armand, I'm interested in your course and coaching but I'd like to ask you...I have an MBA and a PMP but limited work history. Can I still be successful at landing program manager gs 13 or 14 roles if I have strong resume/interview skills?

i heard you can only go up two grades from position you come in as. is that true?
example: come in as gs6 the highest you can apply for is a gs8.
