It's also cultural. I'm a traditional carpenter in the US, and people don't think much of us. But if you're a traditional carpenter in Japan, you're seen as somebody who's keeping their culture alive, and thus, more value is put on the work. We don't have a culture here in the US because all we are now are mass consumers who put very little thought into how things are made.

I was underpaid at my old job and led on by my supervisor that my skills are invaluable. A year later promotion time came and I was fully disappointed. I tried to argue my case of why I deserved more. Got turned down because not having a degree and enough experience. Guess what I did? Submitted my resume to all the job sites and after 3 months, I'm at my current new job making way more than I asked for at my old job. Don't believe these people and be led on. If you think you're worth more, start searching. Company loyalty is not the same form 20 years ago.

Work shouldn't be measured by specific value as long as it is providing value. People may not value Hotel cleaners, but rich people who run big corporations sure would be angry to come to a hotel that is messy and filthy. The hotel cleaner didn't create millions of dollars by changing the sheets or cleaning the sink, but they added a valuable and necessary convenience to the person that does generate millions, and I think that's the value of humanity. Not everyone can be a millionaire, so it's important to generously reward the people that support them. Without the little people, there would be no millionaires because no one would be working or creating for these people.

Seems unfair to the ones who aren't earning what they want but it is absolutely correct. If you don't like what you are earning then figuring what you need to do to increase your marketplace value is the first step to change your situation.

Unionize and strike to re-educate the marketplace. When, for example, garbage piles up under the noses down which the marketplace has viewed the lowest paid workers, their value mysteriously increases.
