George's comments are very interesting. It suggests the barrier to entry into the marketplace is not the cost of making a watch but the cost of marketing it to create demand for a brand. Which may suggest why some make excellent clones rather than invest in their own brand. No matter how good a watch, there will be little or no demand without the marketing, and up against the big players that will cost tens of millions. Watch companies are selling a lifestyle, not a watch.

Problem is no one can walk into a Rolex AD and buy a Rolex they want . In another 5 years time, will superclones be better than Original ?

Reasons to wear rep.
1. Money can be invested in the stockmarket instead.
2. No biggie if you get your watch stolen.
3. 99% looks for 10% of the price.
4. No service costs, just buy a new rep for the same price.

Reasons to wear gen.
1. You are wearing the authentic watch, sense of accomplishment.
2. You can pass it down for generations.

Now you have to decide what's important for you. Life is short, we will all die one day so don't care what others think. You have to make the choice.

That say something about the finish on Rolex watches when the fakes are almost the same. There is a reason that you dont get fakes of Grand Seiko. That finish is on another level…

I have a real Rolex Panda Daytona and a super clone that I take on trips. I have to put a piece of red tape on the inside of the clasp so I don’t confuse them, by the way it keeps better time than the real one!!

Great content guys. I’m sure I’ll get abused, but here we go. I currently have 7 watches in my collection including one genuine Rolex - a YM 40 - and two super clone Rolex’s, ironically the same two featured in this video. Ultimately for me, these are watches I want to buy genuine, but just simply can’t because of the way the AD market is. I refuse to pay grey market prices so I bought replica, until such time as I can get them from an AD. Everyone’s story varies, but that’s mine.

The best tell is the regulator. Rolex regulates its watches by using little screws that you screw in and out of the outer circumference of the balance wheel. This is apparently too much trouble for the guys who make the fakes, and their regulators rely on an adjustable lever. Actually, the lever is probably a better design, but Rolex has come up with something that is hard to copy. Or, actually hard to adjust cheaply.

That's a super clone not a AAA there's a massive difference a AAA will cost you around £100 model depending and a super clone will be anything from £400 up to a grand depending on model

It`s always good to teach the masses. At the very end listen to the old saying: Never buy just the desired article, item whatever without common sense...you have to buy the seller too! But to shield Rolex a little from your statement. Rolex does makes an excellent job for an mass produced ( almost a million watches a year ) watch. Could it be a little cheaper? Absolute no doubt about it but Rolex did made their way up and now they do benefit form their fair share of hard work. As for me, I think I would be able to destinguish a fake from a real Rolex pretty quick, as they always have some sort of flaw be it on the dial, clasp, case or bracelet. Never seen a perfect one unless swapped with original parts.

AD are inadvertently prompting fakes. A Submariner on Rolex website is £9000 and AD`s want £12000 for a 2 year old one. Then there is the pretentious waiting list by AD`s for new models. A service is cost of a fake so it makes a fake very tempting.

Not sure what’s the purpose of the analogy with the masters degree. I’m sure a lot of people will pay to get a degree without doing the work. The off the shelf reps nowadays are really really close. I have both gen and rep of multiple Daytona, AP to compare and even side by side I have to double check, and loupe. I’m not even talking about the modded super clones that you can swap 18k or platinum cases, dials, hands, etc - but those are priced at a different level.
