What Happens to Metabolism in Menopause? | Dr. Robert Lustig

Levels Advisor Robert Lustig, MD, describes how the estrogen decline in menopause affects health.

Menopause is the natural evolution of the ovaries. Eventually their estrogen output becomes nearly zero.

The drop in estrogen causes nervous system changes that generate heat, which can lead to hot flashes.

Women tend to have low serum LDL “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides before menopause, but those levels rise after menopause, putting post-menopausal women at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

Women also lose muscle as they age, which can lead to fat gain.

Focusing on improving metabolic health may help with these concerns.

Rather than “burned out, ” I prefer to say that my ovaries stopped focusing on other people.😅

The most erudite scientific thinker of his age. I read both of his best sellers, FAT CHANCE and METABOLICAL.

Women need to change their diet eat less carbohydrates and eat more meat and fat. fat will help your hormones and the brain. Metabolic health, insulin resistance, pre-diabetic.

There is NO study showing correlation between cholesterol and cardiovascular health. More studies are showing cholesterol below 200 causes deregulation of testosterone and other hormones. You need it, “high” cholesterol (200-260) is normal, look into it.

After a c-section and tubal ligation I was thrown into straight up menopause overnight.. nothing gradual about it.. I was 38.

Mmmm, I understood that the rise in cholesterol post menopause was protective and associated with longevity. I've heard it from different sources but most notably from Malcolm Kendrick.

I think Professor Dr Ben Bickmam knows why they rise, he explains it in his series of lectures about insulin on YouTube.😢

If it was men who went through menopause there would be tons more research. Us women are just shoved aside

I think it’s ridiculous that diet needs to change because “science” sees a change in blood work. Cholesterol is needed for hormones… perhaps it’s there for a hormonal reason? I am not convinced that cholesterol is good or bad and I’m certainly not convinced that they know what is optimal for any one individual, after all, the averages they take are from the ill people who are the ones to get their blood tested. What we really need is to get the additives, toxins, pesticides ect out of our food, water and air.

🌷 Sort of like my two chickens… They’re old … no more eggs from them…. (age changes things!)
they’re in henopause - really! 😄

It because of their period,
When they are pre menopausal they bleed monthly,
And post menopausal they don't, and levels rise

Why don't you talk about andropause as well?

Let’s not take a man’s opinion. He’s literally putting the blame on our own bodies! Interesting to mention after menopause changing diet helps with these risks. If eating the proper human diet should promote metabolic health and negate the rise to cardiovascular disease regardless of pre or post menopause it therefore wouldn’t be our fault for what happens to us naturally before or after menopause. Just saying 😉

Lustig needs to stay in his lane. Partly true, partly unsupported speculation.
