CONNECTING Our 3 Shipping Containers

Moisture, mold, air flow, condensation.... these are the problems we're trying to prepare for with this shipping container build! Because the metal shipping containers don't breath at all, we are trying to make sure that we can get enough fresh air in so that we don't end up with a moisture problem. Lou's looking into fans, mini splits, different types of insulation, and so much more to try to make these things livable for our family with the least amount of toxic materials possible.

Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did watching it just now :) Lou's work ethic never stops impressing me. Max and I just can't wait to be up there with him and Freja (fingers crossed that day isn't too far away if we can get the wood-burning stove set up in the bedroom container!!!!)

Big hugs,
Dana

Idk if it's possible, but I feel like greenhouses in between the containers would be amazing! Food growing right next to the kitchen 😍

Lou works incredibly hard I’m always amazed at how precise and considered his projects are. I like the way he takes time to explain the technicalities of what he’s doing. I’m sure however it turns out it will be a lovely home in which you all will thrive. Max is really cute - he looks like Lou and his happy demeanour I’m sure takes after you Dana. 😊

Maybe you could do a screen room across the front of the 2 main living spaces. Then you have a place to enjoy your view out of the weather but still be outside.

That sweet face! Ooh, Max is so cute!!! Lou is so amazing that he can figure out all of the skills needed to do all of these installs, and Dana, what a great mom you are and I love hearing you think out loud about the possibilities for your home! 💗👍🏻😁

Loved this so much! I would love to see a general Freja update video about how shes doing, her training, her and max, and how she is around the build. Love your work :)

Max is a beautiful baby, he is such a ham! I have 4 boys 9-4yrs old. (You have time!) Mud and dirt are always a problem solving dance in our mountain/creek home. Definitely decide a muck/mud space where you can store shoes and clothing gear that isn't exposed to the elements (mostly freezing and bugs) you won't want to clean everything everyday (though Lou might want to!) I can't wait to see you guys get working on the land. You'll be spending more time outside! Consider a quick green house build this winter to start some seedlings!
Enjoy all the moments!

in the future you could even make the 2 empty spaces between the 3 containers into more rooms, like a playroom for example or some kind of "winter garden" with a full glass front to see outside :) so much potential, beautiful!

So interesting how you talk so calmly about connecting the containers, and air flow & condensation. SMART GUY❗️👌

I think my issue would be that you have to deal with weather just to run to the kitchen or whatever it is. That seems like it makes it harder on you. I love the container idea! Maybe you could just add “hallways” to connect them some day if you decide to keep them.

Maybe build a deck between the bedroom and kitchen. It would give you another space to eat or just relax.just a thought. Lou your killing the build

Definitely you should connect the containers with screened-in porches. Check out what is used to be called dogtrot houses. Very utilitarian.. you could screen them in and it would also help hold in heat even though it's just screen. My friend had ceiling fans in her screened-in areas for summer and never used an air conditioner

I am sure you have thought out your plans thoroughly, this is just food for thought, when we heated our home with wood our bedroom was the furthest from our wood stove. We found a cool bedroom was much more conducive to a good nights sleep. Have you thought of putting your woodstove in the centre container (?).

I'm loving the approach you're taking with your container build. It lends itself to great flexibility for expansion in the future whilst being quick and easy to get up to scratch in order to live in.

Yeah an easy way to go to bathroom on a cold night would be great 👍🏻

You will figure out what works best for your life. I agree living in a space first helps you determine what is really needed. Great job!

I love Max's little chubby cheekers they make me happy!

you could do a wintergarten style in between them, mostly glass. tripple glazed windows that are common in europe are making it to the US. you'd get decent insulation even in wintertime.

So excited to see you guys get to live there. I agree do whatever you feel is right with the containers. Everyone will always have extra ideas and opinions, but it always comes down to what you actually need and want for your home. 💗💗💗
