Massad Ayoob has years of experience in the courtroom as an expert witness. He offers his unique perspective into the Ahmaud Arbery case in Georgia. Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan had extremely problematic issues with how they handled the situation that day. Massad warns gun owners not to be the initial aggressor. Mas says "The totality of the circumstances, motive and rational, all those things come together and have to for those who carry firearms"

Reflections on the Kyle Rittenhouse Trial

Critical Mas(s) with Massad Ayoob is a show that provides expert analysis over a wide range of contemporaneous topics related to civilian and law enforcement self defense, the use of force, and second amendment issues, provided by a renowned and established author with a career spanning decades in training law enforcement officers and the public at large, who is frequently called upon to provide expert witness testimony.

ABOUT MASSAD AYOOB:
Massad Ayoob has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s, and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.

Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He is the current President of the Second Amendment Foundation. If one man should be a professor of gun education it's Massad. Much respect for this man

I still remember two distinct things my TBI firearms instructor told us in a carry class. Just because you are armed doesn’t make you the police. You can use your weapon in your defense or the defense of loved ones or innocents but otherwise stay out of the conflict. The other thing was if you instigated a fight, you cannot use your weapon even if the fight starts to go bad for you. Anti gunners don’t understand that we leave the house armed, the very last thing we want is to get into a conflict. No bird flipping, no yelling and cussing. Since we are armed the results could be fatal. In that respect we are the safest people in the country.

I often change my opinion about stories like this after listening to Massad calmly and clearly bring reason, logic and facts to his well written presentation. Grateful.

If you take on the responsibility to carry a gun. You must do everything in your power to not get in a fight. It is an absolute last resort to pull that firearm.

As a gun owner, thank you for taking the time to clearly and concisely analyze these cases. Very intelligent and in language everyone can understand.

A few months ago, a man who was seen on numerous home surveillance cameras in my neighborhood, and a known burglar, walked by my house at dusk, while I was watering my front yard. I called law enforcement, and they caught him a few hours later. My neighbor gave me a hard time, and asked me why I didn't shoot him.
Let law enforcement do their job. It took dozens of officers, dogs, and helicopters to get the guy.

Don’t be the aggressor, but be wise, people will lie and falsely accuse you.

I started reading Massad's articles in magazines and books back in 1978 when I was 14. I learned so much over those formative years from him and Jeff Cooper. Thanks for everything over the years.

When I read Massads book where he described the Zimmerman case in Sanford FL I was amazed how much of the story was hidden from the public.

I remember hearing about this case when it was in the news but I was not aware of all of the facts (the racially changed social media posts, the comment about shooting the deceased's head off etc). Thank you for filling in some of those blanks.

Even though I didn't know EVERYTHING about the case back then I still knew it was foolish to grab a weapon and chase someone down over property crimes. As you said, don't be the aggressor, just call the authorities and let them handle it.

Brilliant and insightful analysis as always! It should be required viewing in all self-defense classes!

Very well explained and articulated sir. I’d like to suggest an analysis of the Kyle Carruth/Chad Read shooting.

I can’t speak for a living in a rural area but I can definitely say something about living in a big city. carrying a weapon doesn’t make you Bat Masterson in the service of king Arthur’s court, the weapon you carry is only to protect you and yours that’s it nobody else!!! you see a store being robbed you call 911, you come across a woman being beat up by her boyfriend you call 911, you see somebody getting carjacked you call 911, you see a group of people get into a gun fight you run like hell and call 911, the neighbors are playing loud music you call 911, you’re on the road and someone is having road rage you call 911, anything that resembles a confrontation you make sure to be the first to call 911!!!!
anytime anyone wants to have an argument with you for any reason you put your head down and walk away as you’re calling 911!!!! whenever you want to go out with the boys and have a few drinks then guess what, your weapon is not invited to the party! sorry, if something goes down and you have liquor in your system then your lawyer is going to be talking about plea deals. and get that crazy idea out of your head that you could use your weapon to defend your property; we no longer live in the days of hanging horse thieves. the only time you pull your weapon is if you are in total fear of death or “severe”bodily harm!!! someone slapping you it’s not death or “severe” bodily harm, someone pushing you to the ground is not death or “severe” bodily harm did you notice the word “severe”? In closing if you choose to carry a weapon then you better keep your mouth shut and mind your own damn business!!!!

Thank you Mas for being a voice of reason and clarity on a very complex and emotional topic.

You're helping people so much, thanks!

Almost all Hollywood shows, that have guns, will have someone point a gun at someone else for almost no reason. It has to stop. People think that's ok, but then they go to prison.
Hollywood is super toxic and anti gun.

Excellent layout as usual. I've been reading your article voraciously for decades. This is a case in what you absolutely SHOULD NOT do in any similar circumstances.
