A gun without spare ammunition is a temporary gun. As a top firearms instructor, Massad Ayoob knows all the defensive gun usage and gun retention facts. Mas gives three reasons that you should carry spare ammo and magazines.

ABOUT MASSAD AYOOB:
Massad Ayoob has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.

The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several states and regional handgun shooting championships. Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He is the current President of the Second Amendment Foundation. He served 19 years as chair of the Firearms Committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and several years as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. In addition to teaching for those groups, he has also taught
for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the International Homicide Investigators seminars.

Mas has received judicial recognition as an expert witness for the courts in weapons and shooting cases since 1979, and served as a fully sworn and empowered, part-time police officer for 43 years, mostly at supervisor rank. Ayoob founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and served as its director until 2009, and now trains through Massad Ayoob Group. He has
appeared on CLE-TV delivering continuing legal education for attorneys, through the American Law Institute and American Bar Association, and has been retained to train attorneys to handle deadly force cases through the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Ayoob served for two
years as co-vice chair of the Forensic Evidence Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also appeared in each episode of Personal Defense TV (Sportsman’s Channel).

Funny, I just did a video on this. I respect Mas highly, but think he is coming at this from his experience as LE not as a private citizen.

In my below average tour in Vietnam (I was wounded) I learned two things. 1, you can’t carry too much ammo and 2, you can’t carry too much water.

Something Clint Smith said that has always stuck with me: "Nobody every complained about having too much ammo after being in a firefight." I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I always carry a spare mag. The only reason I watched this is because Mas is always worth learning from.

The answer is easy, bullets are cheap and life is priceless.

The older Massad gets, the more I believe he is turning into Obi-Wan Kenobi.

As the old saying goes "better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it." I always appreciate your insights Mr. Ayoob.

My late father taught me to always have at least one reload with my carry rig. He was of the "Son, you never want to have one of ANYTHING" mindset.

Reason 3-- a struggle for retention and a subsequent dropped mag-- had never occurred to me. That's why I think Mas Ayoob's advice is so valuable. Thanks!

I like the way that you frame a pistol as a defensive tool. My Dad(RIP) gave me a great piece of advice that I have heard in the heat of a particular moment, ”if you have to pull your pistol, you’d better make damn sure that you are justified, otherwise, you will have a long time in a small space to think about it”. Some of the most sage advice I’ve ever been given. Much love to you all from North Carolina.

Spare tire, vehicle insurance, first aid kit = the same in my book as carrying a spare magazine. It's just smart on the practical since of things you should do.

When I was a teenager, growing up in a rural area, I had built a range about 75 yards from the house. Whenever I came back from shooting, I always kept a bit of ammunition in reserve. My reason was to maintain possession of the weapon or weapons. I knew full well that the odds of someone trying to take them were infinitesimally small, but I never liked to gamble.

It always surprises me how many will argue for why they won't need an extra magazine rather than why they might need one.

Also, magazines can break. I was picking up something that fell on the floor and rolled under the table. I was carrying a Kahr K9 in a IWB holster behind my strong side hip. When I stood up the base plate of the magazine caught on the edge of the table and was sheared off. The spring, follower and several rounds spilled onto the floor. I've heard of this happening to other people too.

Brillant observation about a magazine being ejected during a struggle, its the angle I hadnt considered.

Whenever I'm out and about, I typically carry pepper spray, a knife (or two), and a subcompact handgun. Thanks to your video, Mas, I'll now carry an extra magazine as well.

Mag failure or the magazine getting released in a struggle were the exact reasons i was thinking. Thank you!
