I wrote a listening and accent reduction book called "Whaddaya Say" (Pearson Education) on this subject. These pronunciations are called "reduced forms". They're caused by speed of speech. I did a 700 page formal research study on the causes of reduced forms at the Univ. of Calif., Los Angeles, and I only studied highly educated native speakers. I found statistical significance for speed of speech as the main cause for these pronunciation changes. Many of my English language learners say "Americans talk so fast". They're absolutely correct. When native speakers talk at a natural speed, these changes happen automatically -- with no planning.
