So my 5 steps for a watercolour painting are

1) Planning: Spend time before you start painting on the choice of subject. What makes a good watercolour subject? What will help the composition

2) Drawing the outline shapes and objects. Get the drawing right before starting to paint.

3) First wash. Cover the whole paper except those areas which are going to be left white.

4) Add in the darks and shadows.

5) With a small brush, add in the details and highlights.

Thanks for this. Thanks especially for the five steps. This has been one of the best tips anyone could have given me about watercolor painting.

31:06 “at this stage it looks a total mess…” YES ! - and I would be desperate and almost give up … but by magic you turned it to a fantastic picture ! Thank you for letting us follow the process

Thank you for showing out the way you plan and think the composition, color choice and why, showing up steps and stages, etc.. this is what is missing in must, to not say all, the "paintings tutorials" on YouTube. They forget that we need to know why they started with that or this color choice on the first wash, how they chose colors thinking steps ahead, second options, etc must of what they call "tutorials" here on YouTube actually should be called "showing up my wonderfull skills". Thank you for this "real tutorial"

Tim, your a master at your craft I've watched many of your video and always enjoy them. I must admit that when you mixed that yellow colour somewhere around the 15minute mark of the video, I was amazed it didn't turn green at all when you painted over the sky, which would have happened to me no doubt lol. Great work and great advice on your process sir.

I can't thank you enough for making such fine art instruction available on YouTube. It is an understatement to say its philanthropic almost. I intend to join your patreon very soon as I get some obligations out the way. Thanks again!

I don't yet have the confidence in my watercolour painting to live with a "total mess" stage for long enough while being safe in the knowledge that I will bring it to a successful conclusion. Hence I begin tinkering, adding to much detail, focusing too much on one spot. Thank you so much for sharing your process. These videos are a fantastic resource.

Thank you so much Tim. You simplifie the difficult World of watercolour. I'm a begginer of watercolour And i must say that it is a trouble for me to control the water and the pigments.

Loved the video sir! Learning from you a lot and, as a beginner and self-taught artist, have definitely understood core concepts about watercolor. Couldn’t be more grateful. :)

Love your painting style Tim!! Have actually followed a few of your demos and the result was pretty good...considering I'm a novice.
It would be helpful if you could mention the names of colours you use and mix while painting.
Thanks

It would help us students to see the reference photo as you go along. Just to give us an idea as to what you are trying to achieve on a real time basis. Love the work btw.
