This was a fun step 1.
Yes I was one those DJ's who use a laptop and mouse but I wasn't using it out for events or gigs. I was a upcoming DJ with a Free DJ Software (Virtual DJ) and learn the art and style of the DJ Software. Then I 1st brought my DJ controller it was intro controller by Vestax it was call the typhoon. I had it for a little while before my worn out on the cross-fader was and at that time family member issue which was my dad he was very very sick I wish he was here to see me doing what I love (Sad). So after he pass away that's when I didn't know what to do but I know my dad want me to continue on with my dream and that's why the last hardware that Vestax VCI-380 which you did a review on back in the days. I 1st love that pro hardware and I brought it and then just messing around and learn how it works and then it was just smooth for me to understand the gear. Now I seen so many gear's I really want to try out and test out so I can understand when I get to a events and gigs I know how it works and know what to do just in case something crazy go wrong I know what to do and be ready for it. I'm getting ready to watch step 2 : Music I can't wait to leave a comment on the next video. Funk Up Salute Peace and Salute.

Some very good pointers there Phil.

One of the things I’ve learned as a student at digital dj tips is that my tried and tested ddj 400 along & rekordbox dj does near enough everything that a full club set up does at a fraction of the cost.

I was tempted to buy the new ddj 800 for its booth out function but learned I could use a splitter on the master out for live streaming.

My biggest issue with controllers is longevity, and build quality. I come from 1200's, they last forever as you know, but that build quality gave me the opportunity to learn, because I kept the hardware for years I was able to get to know it. Phil I'm looking for a controller I can play like an instrument I'm rough on equipment i.e. slamming line faders, scratching, hard finger drumming, and heavy button mashing, it's my style I really get into sets, just looking for a piece of advice from a busy experienced dude such as yourself thanks again.

Yea I stopped going to this party in NYC because they are now known for the DJ shutdown system or the music sounding weird. Ive been training with my ipad and wego4, simple is best for me.

So funny story. I was organizing & playing an event some years ago where I had brought my kit. In that kit, the mixer was a DJM-800 Rotary which I rock to this day! #rotarylust
There was this one DJ standing over the mixer admiring it. I explained to him it was a kit you could buy to swap out the faders. He then asked if I could put the faders back. I mistook his admiration for fear. I told him we couldn't. Right before his set he proceeded to install a janky 2 channel numark mixer he had with him onto one of the channels of the DJM-800 and reconnecting the decks to it. He made it a complete nightmare moving everything around during the party for the DJs playing before and after him. The CDJs were plugged SPDIF direct to the mixer and there analog outs to audio interfaces plus a pair of Tech12' with all the cable management taken care of prior to the gig. You can imagine he wasn't invited back to play again, all this cause he couldn't wrap his brain around using a rotary mixer. (and no he didn't do anything special during his set that he absolutely needed faders on his channels)

I enjoy your output, your videos are interesting and not just for beginners but intermediate and of course pros, I do have a question I have asked many times but still had no answer to, I’m 47 and got my first set of decks (a flightcase with just 2 belt drive turntables and a built in fader no mixer, way back in the mid 80’s as a teen, I was also a roadie for a pretty established party/wedding/venue DJ, I mainly did and still do scratch Djing and love my hip hop, house, Jungle and most stuff in between (except pop lol) any ways.
Here is my question, I have been lucky enough to have owned many pairs of Technics and have still got lots of vinyl, but 2 years ago I decided to take the leap into DDJ’s and I have the SX2, I wouldn’t say I have mastered it but I’m quite tech savvy, BUT,
I have a question and I have Asked All The DJ’s
I know (6) and even Tweeted Serato & Pioneer,
but this is a Serato Question,
I know about midi mapping BUT, I like to have my echo effect using 2 other effects, the shorter delay and I can’t Remember The other lol, anyways,
Is there anyway to midi map all three effects as a preset on a button. Knob or pad..
I have to always keep going in and setting it up again manually everytime I start a mix, scratch or set..
PLEASE HELP..
It’s the only thing I can’t get right..
Cheers
Dave

Should also mention that budgetary constraints might sometimes result in people playing on cracked versions or laptop DJing etc. But then there’s no excuse for that once the money starts coming in :).

Good vid, i still have the pdf of your book from a few months ago, should probably follow along lol.

Also, would you suggest buying a dj library? or is it viewed as being really lazy (i need to get more music but am a poor college kid)

I respect your knowledge and experience and appreciate your free videos but Step 1 is not "the gear"
Step 1 is MUSIC and finding out what sort of MIXING you want to do with
that MUSIC! Any gear will do to start with (even just a free (not
stolen) software that you call "crappy" will help anyone understand the
basic concepts of mixing...) because until you have a half decent
collection of music you will not be able to know what gear suits you
best... Getting people to try and choose equipment before music just
does not make sense to me (to be really blunt how will they try the gear
if they have NO music???) Understanding equipment is secondary to
understanding your music collection.
