DATA:

Let’s talk about whether or not spices and herbs expire.

Spices are different blends of dried roots, bark, or stems. Spices typically last between two and three years.

Herbs are dried leaves, such as:
• Basil
• Oregano
• Thyme
• Rosemary
• Mint
• Bay leaves
• Dill
• Parsley
• Cilantro
• Sage

Herbs typically last between one and three years.

Then, there are whole spices, such as:
• Whole peppercorn
• Coriander
• Mustard seeds
• Fennel seeds
• Caraway seeds
• Cumin seeds
• Clove
• Cinnamon sticks

Whole spices can last four years or even longer. You could get these in the whole form and then use a grinder.

When herbs are past their expiration date, they still may be fine to use. However, they may lose flavor, potency, and color. They won’t make you sick unless there is mold growing in the product.

Be sure to store herbs in a glass sealed bottle with a tight-fitting lid and keep them in a dark, cool place. If you have oil seeds, like sesame seeds or poppy seeds, you may want to keep these in a refrigerator.

And if you're not sure how long you've had the spice, you can tell if it's usable or not by checking its smell and flavour, by rubbing or grinding a small amount in the palm of your hand. If the smell is weak and the flavor is faint, it is better to throw it away.

I'm still using a glass jar of strong chilli powder I first bought ten years ago! It is still as potent as ever.

Being a south indian by birth, i think it will be better to share my opinion on storage of these natural wonders-spices.. whatever spice you buy, make sure it is dried well, not too dry 75percent dried, then, store in a airtight glass containers only. Do not use plastic containers, use only glass.. the spices in this condition stays fresh for 4 years, and after 4 years, they just start to lose their potency.. that's all. But it's 100 percent consumable.. if you have a spice which is stored more than 4 years or so, grind it use it for morning detox drinks, and powder it to spice up your dishes.. investing in spices is also a high return investment only if you make sure that it is near to 75 percent dried..

I have been saving those small moisture packets I get with my meds and place them in between the lid and the shaker portion ( if they fit without damage, or cutting) This helps with the moisture control for me, might not be good for everyone. I keep most of my spice in a draw next to stove, ( on their sides so I can see what is in each bottle and I keep the larger moisture packets there. No moisture, no caking.

Good info….. unlike some YouTubers who tell people to throw away spices every 2 years…..

I do use a lot of spices. They are in good Ziploc bags sealed labelled and in the Freezer. I remove little at a time and fill my small glass jars and use for every day. The whole spices are best, because a little can be ground and it is awesome. I have a coffee grinder Exclusively for this purpose. Spices are precious and expensive, use them wisely. 💗💗💗

If my use is relatively intermittent, I use my vacuum sealer with canning devices, jars, resealable bags, which have 0 effects on the products. It's a volume issue, no wasted space with the bags.

I keep all the spices in the refrigerator. Last long. Also keep using them. Sometimes I dry roast cummin, pepper, bay leaf, cloves and cardamom so they last longer. Always store in the refrigerator. Try to keep them while not in powder form because once you grind them and don’t use them often, they lose their flavor and power.

I saw where someone bought a container of 250, 000 year old pink Himalayan salt. 250, 000 YEARS!!!
But his container said that the salt was going to expire in less than a year! 🤔
Good thing he bought that when he did! Whew! 😆🤫
