If they had united, it would have been an inverted, twisted version of the relationship between Thingol and Melian in the Silmarillion. In that light, he wasn't lying about uniting her to power. Thingol became one of the most powerful beings in Middle Earth through His relationship with a Maia. How much more Galadriel, already one one of the highest among the Noldor, if she had joined with Morgoth's lieutenant?

It is pretty funny in my mind. Sauron being an Ainu means that he existed before time started ticking. Galadriel may be immortal, but she still has to be born. She thinks she’s a person, but she can’t even fathom what Sauron, Saruman, Gandalf, and Radagast have experienced beyond Arda…
