this video perfectliy shows an effect of "the American Dream": the self-centrering/focusing on yourself and your own success, rather than focussing on the social circumstances, which are in a shambolic state and which need to be changed.

One of my friends dated a guy just because he told her that one day he would move to America. 😂😂 That's how deeply this idea is embedded into our psyche.

I think today it's less relevant than ever, given the impact the web has had in connecting people across the world.

Almost every country aside from the UK and US that has higher economic mobility also are counties that are almost purely homogeneous, meaning they don’t have diversity.

Nobody brings up that point.

The quantitative averaging that goes into “how likely you are to make it” in America doesn’t account for the divergence in cultural values. Countries that have higher economic mobility, do not have divergent values at a deep cultural level.

Also keep in mind that immigrants (like my own family) have higher economic mobility than people who have roots here, but the level of individual accomplishments diminishes within a few generations?

Why because they become more distant form the value system of their families great “founders” with each generation.

People tend to attribute success to luck and happenstance, but outside of physical health and specific outlier situations, you will find that “success itself is a culture”.

The core values of groups that are successful tend to have very similar values to one another. A point nobody seems to make.

My brother and I came to America from Iran in 2003, I had $700 something dollar in cash. worked our asses off, studied ridiculously hard, no weekends or holidays, worked like a MF. I became a kidney doctor & he a plastic surgeon. Not country like it especially the country we were born in. I love this country so much. Please keep it this way

I am always saying to people that it is not about the hard work... But about the effort you put in at the right time, aligned with the right people.. Etc.

Thumbs down are from people living off credit card debt who consider themselves "wealthy."

He's absolutely correct! I'm in Hollywood, and here, in order to live out your dream, nepotism is key.

I chose this video to add into my Social Justice class playlist because it clearly explains “the American dream” and how it’s mythology is the only think attracting people to migrate in America.

It's real, you just have to be asleep to see it. That's why it's a dream.

I always believed that in order to get ahead in life it is NOT WHAT YOU KNOW but more importantly who you know and how both parties can help each other. Thank you Keith and Mind Valley for helping me continue to say (B.I.Y) believe in yourself to all of the haters. Much love, respect, admiration, humility, inspiration, motivation, wealth, and empowerment to you ALL! #believeinyourself 🤓

The American dream = greatest opportunity. It's open. It's freedom to open any business.

The dream is dead as disco.
In 1970, a CEO earned 30 x the salary of an average employee.
In 2017, a CEO earned 360 x the salary of an average employee.
The richest 20 Americans own as much as (the poorer) half of the US population.
This can never be fair or even helpful to a society. These are comparable conditions of inequality as in the Middle Ages.

i mean yeah, if you notice how many americans go to asia to teach english or backpack or the idea of the LBH, then it makes sense already. i wasnt born in the u.s, but i might as well have been since i came when i was 6 months old. because of this, and being raised by non immigrant parents, i never ever believed the american dream was real. because there was no external motivation for me to. there is no "dream" anywhere. only the idea that the grass is greener on the other side. sure there may be more ideal places to live in, but thats all it is. an ideal. there is no guarantee you will make it, because capitalism relies on the small successes of meritocracy to keep the system working. it doesnt care where people come from or what their chances are. or how many people actually make it. (who determines that scale, anyway) only if they know influential people who often got lucky in their family background. or went viral or are best friends with the daughter of a ceo.
