The Brace Drill: Drill Invention #3 #shorts

I'm working on a few simple tools in these shorts, and their history and evolution. The third step in exploring drills is the brace drill! Invented sometime in the 1400's, they offered some clear advantages for drilling holes.

You can make this design more efficient by welding a bar from the handle section down to a point that contacts a small divet on the drill section, to avoid losing accuracy or force to the tool flexing

I can’t imagine how the originals creators of these tools were perceived by those around them.. either witches or genius, I guess.

I started working construction in the early 1980s and we still used braces then to drill holes for deadbolt locks it wasn't until the early 1990s that cordless drills were powerful enough for serious work. Yeah we had corded drills but we didn't always have access to electricity in a vacant apartment for example.

I'll just say this kind of device is really really easy to use and great for precision work even now in 2022.

Love your channel’s concept. I think to myself probably 10-20 times everyday when interacting with things how did we ever figure this out without any of the tools already available? I’d love to see you start to get into steam powered machines, that era of history is so cool.

Brace drills still beat most normal handheld impact drivers with regards to the amount of torque they can deliver (you can get big expensive ones….).
Only really matters when trying to drill very deep holes on dense wood.

Use that same drill bit but with pump drill. the bit you used on pump drill was ludicrous.

Creating stuff from 0 fits this format perfectly. Please make more of these shorts and include more primitive technology if posible, as well as more sophiticated things.

Bro this kind of drill already exists like 100 years old already

Man, your life is gonna get a hell of a lot easier when you invent electricity, you'll see.

The pump drill seems like so much more advanced technology than a crank

My family has a few of these passed down from generation to generation, nice ones with freely rotating handles to avoid blisters, and chucks made using the modern manufacturing techniques of the time to where it works as well as a chuck on a modern drill. They can get the job done. They're pretty cool

These shorts are cool and I've been watching them all but I miss the long format videos too! Hope you have more coming soon!

When that suffer is red his and your twisting it you want to pull it at the same time.
Pulling keeps it straight and more consistent.

I like this little series. I kinda rooting for the pump drill.

there's a reason people still use these for fine woodworking

Something that you might want to consider is that the first innovation to the hand crank drills was a slotted space in which the drill bits would be fit into. Basically what you would do is have what amounts to a set of tweezers that would be tied together with twine to hold the bits in place. The whole thing was about a 30 second change however it would mean that you wouldn't have to deal with replacing the entire drill if the bit broke and the same thing goes if you were to somehow break the handle. It was very cool and I had one years ago but it was stolen by a burglar who didn't know what they had.
