Another benefit compared to battery tools is the fast charge capability: a beer and a sandwich!

The sound of a brace and auger chewing through wood is second only to a sharp plane on a nice piece of straight grained white pine

It was all about the brace, 'bout the brace, 'bout the brace! 🤣❣️☺️

Love my braces. 10.8v gathering dust on the side while my brace is running smoothly with oil all the time! Its my 4 year old daughters favourite tool to use. “The twisty drill” is what she calls it 😁 thanks for the video. Interesting seeing some of the earlier versions 👍

My step dad just surprised me with a Stanley brace. I’ve been looking to see if it has all its parts and what not. Still unsure but I’m excited to clean it up and see how well it works. Jaw looks good-ish. Might need a new spring but I’m glad you’re here so I can just keep binging lol!

Love my new three jaw brace, it's such a good tool. Used it today with a standard 3mm drill bit and I was boring a hole that was just smaller than the entire length of the drill bit. I had very little wiggle room on the 8mm thick workpiece that I was drilling through, plus I was drilling at an angle. I did four of them and they all turned out perfectly because you can take your time and follow a line horizontally (I didn't use the ring trick as I've no idea where my wedding ring is, but I find just working out the spot on your stomach or groin to push against works perfectly every time). There's no way I wouldn't have skewed one of the holes with my power drill and ruined a workpiece.

I just got sent my first brace by my grandmother & had been meaning to look into them more before trying to use it. Thank you.

Since I am in one of those nexus where there's nothing around me, I'm making my own brace drill bending hot steel and welding a modern chuck on it. great video, thanks!

Great video, James! And once again your timing is impeccable, b/c I’ve been thinking a lot about—and buying—braces of late. They’re an awesome and much under-used tool.

Loved the info about the torque, and the intro line was hilarious 🤣🤣🤣

Lee Valley Tools here in Canada sells braces, two and three jawed chucks as well as the "egg-beater" drill. They also sell various taper square bits including a 3/8" socket driver and 1/4" hex for screwdriver bits.

Sometimes there is a problem cleaning and re-lubing old chucks. There may be little ball bearings about 3/32' in diameter inside so work over a baking tray, a cookie sheet is ideal so if there is a surprise you'll catch the parts. This is especially likely in the extremely high quality tools. A little smear of grease on internal contact surfaces is an ideal re-lube.

Anyone from the UK, Workshop Heaven stocks two models of new braces that have three jaw chucks AND accept square tapered shanks. I'm planning on getting one as they look very useful, but they arent cheap (especially the Deluxe one)

As they say, there is always something to learn. Thanks

I have a few and the batteries never run out at inconvenient occasions!

Kinda glossed over it, but to clarify for anyone new to braces, the two jaw chuck is for the tapered square auger bits and a three jaw chuck is for round shanked bits.

But James! I need an adapter, so that I can use ordinary auger bits [no slipping through - round or hex shank] with my brace. Drilling by hand is *so much fun* !

Great job on the info, very easy to understand 😊😊👍👍

There is a Soviet brace, from 80's with 3 chucks. It's amazing, I can tell you.
