"Pick up a camera. Shoot something. No matter how small, no matter how cheesy, no matter whether your friends and your sister star in it. Put your name on it as director. Now you're a director. Everything after that you're just negotiating your budget and your fee." James Cameron

Thank you for this information. As simple as it was hearing that you need to have enough experience in whichever field of film that one claims interest in, it was still helpful to hear.

All stories should be personal to the writer, to a degree. In that the stories include elements of our own lives which is the only way to write with authenticity about the experiences and emotions of the characters we create.
The personal elements tend to be deeply submerged within the story, so that it's not apparent to anyone else except to the writer. Actors do the same thing. They use personal experiences to create the role and generate emotions. Writing purely personal stories for film - as in autobiographical - is extremely difficult because it's so hard to extract meaning from events or experiences without the benefit of a lengthy passage of time or simply a different writer, to bring perspective or a wider context.
It's really difficult when writing about personal experiences to move beyond recreating the events and finding the actual story. Harder still, is the ability to re-shape events to fit an overall theme. It's natural to resist changing events because the sole purpose behind writing purely personal stories is to present the events as they happened. This is all stuff I learned from trying to write a personal story and the inner resistance I encountered when I found the need to alter events to create meaning.

Great video, I have a question not really related to this, but do you have a video that talk about symbolism in story writing ?

Doesnt seem practical, maybe its just me... like "just jump in" or "find a mentor" sounds easy but practically if you have no connection to movies, how is one supposed to start?
