I am very very much this way when it comes to trying to get a service dog. I know that it would be EXTREMELY beneficial to me and make my life unimaginably easier for similar reasons to what you talked about with your dog. Deep pressure therapy and their ability to distract (especially from self-harming stims during meltdowns which I experience) is something I feel I really really need, and animals are also a special interest of mine and I know how quickly they can take me out of terrible terrible mental places I find myself in (as well as calming my sensory issues as soon as an animal is brought to my attention).
But the thing is that I feel 'high functioning' and like it 'hardly effects me' (even though I KNOW that this is a load of shit) that I am honestly humiliated when I try to suggest to someone that I should pursue a dog. It's difficult to work through

I just barely, a week ago, got the courage to ask for an accommodation in University for the first time. It is helping tremendously already.

*That's the exact same arguments when people say, "it could always be worse." Eventually, it gets down to one final person. DAMN... their life must suck...*

I know a lot of disabled that don’t even use there accommodations because of this. My other problem I have is that abled people decide what is reasonable accommodation. Recently I forgot the school I currently go to provides scribes so I didn’t have a solution to in class work (thank goodness I found out at my update accommodations appt) because the other school refuses to give it to me because they think note taker is equal to it. In cases where the disabled can take there own notes and just need to make sure they didn’t miss something yes but in cases where disability takes away the ability to write no because the note taker isn’t writing for you so doesn’t know what you want added or subtracted etc

WOW!!! Just hearing this, is very disheartening To me. :( Thank you As Always For really Breaking it down and really explaining it! I Appreciate you! And as An Autistic, it makes me now think that when I talk to other Autistic Individuals weather it's on social media or (Not) Especially at work, I guess, Every one of them on that level of Asking Me for advice about How to Not Be afraid to ask for what they need The Reason why Autistic individuals are either Scared of going To Apply for jobs and actually starting employment everyday or just in general because they Do Feel (Like you Said), like they're a burden to is Not at All True. My Heart Goes out To Every Last Autistic Individual Out there because, I get how they feel.... because I Felt at one point, Felt the Exact Same way. I've came to realization as An Autistic (Though I can Ask and adapt fine) that it's Not Necessarily that My Needs aren't important... Because it is, But Some For those with a Disability Just Need it a Little extra Only because, their lifestyle of being to access their Needs, is the only way that they'll proceed with that kind of accommodation in the environment. And Mine is more of (And Has always Been More of) Emotional Assistance. And I have learned to be okay with the fact that, I may have only a couple of Accommodations when i'm in the workforce, But It doesn't Mean that I'm less No matter what Direction in my life takes me, Weather it's in the workforce or not. I THINK EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT. BUT SO IS ALL INDIVIDUALS WITH A DISABILITY. And We Are Not Done Fighting for Inclusion or the Importance of A Disabled Person. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN, NATHAN.

I loved the argumentation. And it can be applied to other social struggles :) <3

You know very well by now that in my country there isn't accommodation or special aids for autistics. But if there were and I knew what I know now I would definitely ask for it because I had to take 3 years off from my university due to overload. However I think the thought of not deserving because of high functioning is related to our strict and rigid moral codes as autistics. I guess I would overthink about if there is someone who deserves more and I supplant them.

I just thought of an analogy while watching your video. We need accommodations to function in a society that is often incompatible with us, like needing an adapter for your phone’s power cord while on vacation in another country. (I like to use a lot of technology analogies when talking about autistic experiences, because it’s something I understand well, not because I think autistics are robots/not human)

Why do they make the bottoms of beds have sharp things!?!?!? That happens to me all the time when the bed gets shoved a bit :)

Good Lord this speaks to me so much. For a while I even doubted my own diagnosis because of this hierarchical bullshit like this.

So I have had some thoughts on getting an autism service dog but I’m not sure if I would really benefit from having a service dog or if I am just interested in getting a service dog so I can legally speaking be allowed to take it with me almost anywhere/everywhere. I guess my question to you would be what made you decide that having an autism service dog would be beneficial to you and whether or not it was really a need or a want? Hopefully this is something similar to what you are referring in your video.

I love this video and shared in many groups I belong to. People are expressing their gratitude for it being shared. BUT: can you please not wear a t-shirt like you are wearing in the video and NOT show us what is on it? I almost put my nose against my screen, trying to look down the edge to see what those three panels of images ware all about! :-D
