Why MMA FIGHTER don't lift weights

Fighters may focus more on bodyweight exercises, resistance training, and functional movements that help them develop explosive power, speed, and endurance.

The reason why some MMA fighters may not lift weights is that they believe it can make them bulky and slow them down. They also want to avoid the risk of injury that can come with heavy weightlifting, such as strains, sprains, and tears.

Instead, MMA fighters often use other forms of strength training that help them build functional strength and power. These can include exercises like plyometrics, kettlebell swings, medicine ball throws, and bodyweight movements like pull-ups, push-ups, and squats.

MMA fighters don't lift weights like traditional bodybuilders.

In other news, the sun is hot.

Hobby Fighter who cross trains here. We do lift weights, but our training can be divided up in 3 sections. Prep season, In season, Off season. Prep season and Off season is when we do the majority of our weight lifting to build muscle, how much we lift really depends on our weight class goals for that season. Can't train like a heavy weight if you want to compete in feather, and can't lift like a feather if you plan on training in heavy.

As for when we are in season, we don't lift heavy all that often, and the large reason for this is because of recovery efficency. Kinda hard to do mma cardio style training if your legs are literally dead for a week after your killer leg day. It's just not time efficent. In season the majority of our training will consist of cardio, pylometrics, light sparring, and when we do lift weights it wont be anything crazy, just enough to keep in shape.

Once again this is because we will be competing in competitions. We got to be in optimal health before the fight.

Typically most pro athletes actually follow this model across all sports. The majority of our heavy lifting will be during the off season.

As a moderate mma fighter, it’s weirdly true, no we don’t use it to become physically huge. But we use it for logical improvements, like endurance and core power. It’s like a puzzle, it needs to fit right.

"When you throw those heavy swingin punchrs your joints will get messed up if you don't lift weights"

When I did Judo, we did a lot of rope climbing, gi pullups, carrys and kettlebell swings. In boxing we did a lot of dips and pushups. You want to strengthen the needed muscles for punching and throwing, thats for sure. But you want to do as little strength training as possible with maximum result, so you have as much time as possible for martial arts training and recovery.

And this is why Leon Edwards is the best human to have ever existed.

For example :Muhammad Ali, he was not too muscular compared to other boxer, he trained more the endurance and agility. Because more muscle = more oxygen so you can fatigue quicker

MMA fighters do train like bodybuilders with the exception that they also have a prioritized mobility routine to maintain mobility and flexibility. Weightlifting doesn't make you stiff if you have a mobility routine.
