I don't know if it has been said here already, but thats called convergent evolution. It's also viewable here on earth. Many completely different species evolved on completely different continents but they still are extremely similar.

This was my thought. The reason we all evolved this way was to suit our environment. Aliens living in a wholly different environment may be unrecognizable to us, since we wouldn't be familiar with any species who functions in their niche; but aliens on an Earth-like world would evolve to capture the same niches.
