You can now publish 3 minute long YouTube Shorts. Here's what I think that means...

I propose a game: take a drink (or eat a s’more) every time I say "YouTube Shorts" or "Tall Shorts" during this video 😂

Excited for next week's vid!

Here's an upside: I publish my Shorts on Tiktok as well, where they get 10x or more views. To have a video monetised, Tiktok videos need to be over 60 seconds. For the last few Shorts I've been creating a long version for Tiktok and then trimming them down to 60 seconds for YouTube.

I'm publishing a Tiktok tomorrow that's 1:17 long. Instead of editing it down, I'm now going to sit on it for two weeks and publish it on the 15th 🎉. No editing required!

I'm excited. Thanks for the video, Nate!

I'm so happy with this change, I can finally have a short that tells a story without needing to cut the hell out of it to fit in 60 seconds.

Let's call them cargo shorts. Like normal shorts, but with more space for stuff.

The short shelf has really damaged my channel in several ways. I won’t touch these new “tall shorts.” Shorts are a good way to make less money on your channel. Much much less.

I've been a shorts channel only and it has paid off (180k subs). I've always hated cramming a ton of information in 60 seconds since I have to leave out a ton of key points. I've found that I need about 1:30 minutes to get it all in. So, this will be a breath of fresh air for me.

In case anyone might appreciate a fun fact. Nate’s wife here. 👋🏻 Since we’re talking YouTube “Shorts”. Nate is 6’2” and I am 5’ even. Let’s just say he has always had a thing for shorts. 😉

Little concerned that this might be the beginning of a few years long transition to all content being moved to a swipe feed.

My main concern is on the money earning side. Yes, Youtube Shorts don't make much money right now. But consider the format for monetization right now. Every four shorts on the shelf the viewer watches (or five or whatever the number is, I forget), an ad plays. The idea is, the watch time each short gets from that viewer is the percentage the channel gets of the revenue earned from that shorts view. Hence why the earnings on shorts can vary wildly. More watch time, more percentage of that ad money that is earned. Now suddenly there's going to be shorts that are minutes long. It's not like ad revenue will suddenly be more potent to accommodate the longer watch time potential. So that means that shorts that are 1 - 3 minutes long will earn a bit more (assuming they're able to keep viewers watching for their duration), while the rest of the shorts will earn far, FAR less than normal. So basically anybody still making 15 - 30 second shorts are going to see a nosedive in earnings once the 1 - 3 minute long shorts are more normalized. I might have my details wrong, but if I'm understanding the shorts monetization correctly, this is going to spell doom for anybody who earns any kind of living on shorts, myself included.

As shorts creator the only good I see with this update is when I need to add my CTA at the end. perhaps adding an extra 3 secs.

That's about it. (if by chance I made a short so jammed packed it filled the 60 mark.)

The 60 secs length on shorts was the bread and butter of "shorts" it's the reason behind it's success. Not a fan, but I agree with what you're saying. Let's evolve with YouTube and see what happens. 🤷‍♂️✌️

Thank GOD I don't have to make two different versions of vertical videos anymore (one under 60 seconds for YT Shorts and one over 60 seconds for TikTok Creativity Program). Great news all around!

So let me get this straight... Youtube shorts came out, ruined tons of channels outside of channels that did shorts only, gave very little in the way of ad revenue and changed viewer behavior to the point where mindless scroll really became a problem, and the next step is to make those shorts longer.... so the attack on long form videos continues.

I think that most that watch and like shorts (myself included) like the fact that the topic will "get to the point" and change to the next short within 60 seconds. That's some of the entertainment in itself. So longer ones, except for creators that try to "cram" their best inside that 60 seconds which makes the extra time good for them, it will be interesting to see the retention outcome of this in the next few months of analytics.

Nathaniel, I saw this topic on other channels but had no desire to watch it. You know where this is going. I knew that if you were addressing this topic then it is important. Therefore; I will reflect on stories that I’ll tell using Tall Shorts. Thank you as always. Russ

Yes Nate, I can see that story telling will be the key here. The retention or should I say the attention span of the viewer will determine the success of a “Tall Short”. Most Shorts viewers have that itchy trigger finger hovering ready to swipe. Great vid as usual. Keep em comin. 👍❤️🙏

What I’m interested to find out:
Will CPM change based the length of short form videos?

The biggest benefit is that you won’t have to rely on a thumbnail to get views. - Long form Contant relies on a thumbnail and title to get a goodclick through rate
- Short form content gets stumbled upon by scrolling
