DJI Action 3: Does this Action Camera OVERHEAT?

Does the DJI Osmo Action 3 overheat or suffer in cold weather? I stress tested this camera in 3 different environments to see how it impacted battery life and here's what happened.

very good test ! amazing how long it can work on 1 battery. I never used action cam to record over 30 minut (30 was on rafting) without stoping record (no sens to record no sens video). After this all updates video quality is improve and it is much closer to gopro (dynamic range, autoexposure setting etc.)? or will you make video about it ?

Great testing, the Action 3 seems to well in hot and cold conditions. I don't have many overheating issues, but I tend to use my action camera outdoors 95% of the time. Great video, thanks for sharing.

I did timelapse with screen saver under direct sunlight mid day and here it reaches 38 Degree Celsius, 2 hours with battery in the unit, 5 hours with no battery in the unit powered with a usb-c cable from dji battery case. No overheating at all. All timelapse successfully finish recording.

No freezing test from my end. Loving the Action 3 🥰

Hey Suzi here's my experience. I spent a month with the camera in Philippines where you know is hot all the time lol. I shoot in 4k60 but in smaller increments of time, it never overheated and died when battery ran out. Couple problems tho, 2 of the batteries batteries after few times recharging on the case refused to take a charge but in few days started back, also for some reason I lost/ couldn't open some of the videos I shoot including the 2 time lapses I took . So that's it, and say hi to Martin

How is it possible? I just bought DJI Osmo Action 3 and I can not even record 4k25fps more than 5-10 min and its not that I mean 25 Celcius.. I am in Europe btw.

I use my action cameras (GoPros 7 and 10) primarily for car vlogging, with the camera mounted on the inside of the windshield or underneath my car's glass roof. I deal with constant overheating, particularly with the camera mounted on the windshield, if there's any amount of sun shining through the windshield. I set the GoPro 10 with extended battery mode enabled, usually in Cinematic mode (4K 30 fps), though I've experimented with lower resolution settings. Because I'm doing car vlogging, I am capturing short scenes over extended periods (drives of 8 hours or longer), and I keep the cameras plugged into USB power. It's typical for a camera to overheat after a couple of hours. The best way I've found to avoid overheating is to set the camera to power down a short time after it's last been used, and then "wake" the camera when I want to take a shot ... though that means that whatever I was hoping to capture may be in my rear view mirror by the time the camera wakes up!

Of course, car vlogging is a different use case than the one you tested. And like you said, these cameras probably work best under uses where they have some air flow around them. Still, just about every car vlogger I know uses action cameras (primarily GoPros) in a configuration similar to what I've described.

I'd upgrade to the latest GoPro or perhaps switch to the Action 3 if I thought they resisted overheating better than the GoPro 10. But in any event, next time you want to heat test your cameras, I'd love to see a car vlogging test! Thanks for all you do.
