Family sues Cook County Sheriff after man killed by fellow jail inmate

Last year was a record at the Cook County Jail for inmate deaths, and one of the most violent was a brutal murder inside the jail's mental health hospital. Johnny Hendrix was one of 18 inmates to die in custody at Cook County Jail in 2023, and on Wednesday, his family's attorneys announced a lawsuit against the sheriff's department, which runs the jail. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

mental health inmates should not be in a cell with anyone! if you’re in a mental health wing in jail, it’s not like you’re there cause your depressed or anxious, it’s enough where they need to be separated from all other inmates for the safety of them and others. 18 deaths this year seems crazy to me

I was in Division 8 which is the Mental health ward in the Cook County Jail back in 2006. I remember there was one guy who had severe mental illness. I was coming back to the deck and was on the other side of the locked door. The correctional officers lifted this guy up and smashed his face all into the window on the other side right in front of me. He didn’t even do anything wrong. He was just talking to himself. They were laughing about it like it was funny. That jail is a disgusting place to be in and I’m so glad I came home in 2008 and I have not been in trouble since.

You can’t blame the victim’s family for his homelessness. He probably had severe mental illness.
It’s not acceptable for a hospital patient to be injured during their hospitalization. The same rule should apply to penal institutions.
