What is Deep Tissue? Here we examine the meaning, implications and application of Deep Tissue Massage!
In Anatomy, structures that are closer to the surface of the body are ‘SUPERFICIAL’ and tissues that lie further from the surface are ‘DEEP’. So, Deep Tissue Massage is simply any treatment that works more than just the superficial layers of tissue, eg, Skin and top layer muscles, but instead includes work on deeper muscles, ligaments, joints and sometimes visceral organs.

Contrary to popular belief (by the public and many therapists!) Deep Tissue Massage does NOT have to be: A) Aggressive, B) Very painful to be effective, C) Use very heavy pressure, D) Physically exhausting for the therapist, or E) Risk repetitive strain for therapists

If you want to do effective, pain-free Deep Tissue work, here are the steps to follow:
1. Start with superficial tissues
2. Pump, Stretch and perform Myofascial techniques to normalise tissue texture
3. Once a layer has softened, you can move deeper without pain or excessive force
4. If a layer is painful (greater than 4/10) Pump and Stretch
** Note - If you are straining or the technique is causing discomfort, you are being impatient. Back off on your pressure and pump to relax the layer you are trying to force your way through!
