The meaning is pretty straight forward.
The only reason there are any controversies surrounding the concept is because people on average have it so good in America that they now have to create problems. Their resilience level has been lowered because life is so good and now they are easily offended by anything and everything.

Freedom of speech? I'm married. I gave that up years ago.

And as recently as 2017, the supreme court upheld in Matal v. Tam, the “Slants” case that so-called “hate speech” is protected speech. There is no such legal (unprotected) category as hate speech in America.

People need to get over their my feelings and "grow up" into men and women instead of acting like children constantly! Truly!

Freedom of speech is a right to say anything you want without fear of persecution, prosecution and/or punishment, if you hinder free speech then it's not a right but a privilege.

Think of it this way, you can say whatever you want but if I don't like what you say then you'll be punished for it. Is that freedom of speech? Freedom of speech doesn't have conditions applied to it, if it does then it's not free because it has constraints applied to it.

No "if's" no "But's", freedom is to be free from restriction and punishment. End of!

Am I right to assume that the founding fathers wanted free speech not only to be able to criticize the government or for people to be able to exchange ideas without fear of retribution regardless of how offensive it may be I'm I wrong?

Hey was it History Channel that use to play Farscape late at night, early AM? If it was, you need to put it back on. It's like therapy for me. I need it!
Thank you & God bless. :)

I am an American, not a Yankee, but an American. A Yankee is a person born in the u.s.. Having said that, I believe in freedom, however, rules must be applied so that certain freedoms cannot be exercised. Otherwise, we would have anarchy and that is not good..

I am Not anymore an enemy than the air breathed. Any opposition, is merited & subject to instilled values, which indicates a legacy of heritage.

I have freedom of speech just as long as I don't say something that offends people... right then I don't have freedom of speech.
