Jordan Peterson freedom of speech vs. offensiveness

Jordan Peterson answers a question about the right to 'freedom of speech' eclipsing the right to not be 'offended'. The subject of the matter being the so-called 'transgender pronouns'.

Jordan Peterson answers this question rather outstandingly by stating: "In order to be able to think, you have to risk being offensive." The word think relates to critical-thinking with the purpose of finding the truth.

Afterwards he elaborates his point further by making it clear to viewers that any pursuit to finding a truth holds the risk of offending someone, even the pursuit of the interviewer herself.

His system glitched for a moment after hearing those weird words "right not to be offended"

You know ... this is a great interview ... because both people demonstrated a virtue.
Peterson defended his position in an intelligent and civil but devastating way.
And she, rather than blowing up ... actually admitted "I'd never looked at it that way"
She actually had the ... intellectual rigor ... to realise, "Wait, you have a point there". Which is ... actually quite refreshing.

"right to not be offended"... How he kept his calm without bursting to laughs after this ridiculous premise is incredible. And not only that but he also destroyed that argument immediately after, calmly. What a boss.

I love that he said, "ha, got ya!" and its not in like a juvenile way to attack her. This is debate!

God I love Peterson. He's a beacon of hope in this time of peak outrage. The man is a true wordsmith.

"Right not to be offended" this is the same line of thought that brings about censorship and moderation on so many levels because we live in a society filled with people who will stop at nothing to not risk having their ideals and ego offended.

I've never heard a better retort to a question before.

We need to appreciate that she did not start yelling random gibberish like many other would do.

In case you're wondering, for the full context, she never worked out a response.

1:18 is what happens when you are not interested in understanding the other person's view, but only in attacking them.

What I absolutely love about this, is that he didn’t let her get away with it and quickly jump to the next question. He made her think consciously about what she said and she should be very grateful for that. She had a clear agenda which perhaps was enforced on her by someone else, who knows? She really needed to try to understand him first before automatically making judgements and assumptions. She should know better IF she was a journalist. Because this raises the question: are these people in the media actual journalists? Or have they just been put there? I really hope this moment was a wake up call for her and made her question her own beliefs and values.

Something Jordan didn't mention and I think many people don't is that getting offended is also a choice. You can choose NOT to get offended, NOT to take everything personal, instead of demanding others. It's something you can work on, understanding that INTENTION matters. Not just words and action, but intentions. You can clearly see if a person intends to offend or not, and that is not in words but tone of voice and body language.

For those who are offended most of times.... you should be offended more often and build tough skin.
