Boating is a lot of fun. They depreciate a lot and fast. If you find a good one, and can bring it back like he has you reap the dividends. He worked diligently on that tub. Thru the sweat of the hot sun, bugs, rain, mud, mold and crud. Big salute to you for a job well done. In the end you turned an eye sore into a thing of great use and beauty. Awesome job.

Appreciate the breakdown on this. What it highlights is that unless you have the skills and time, it’s not worth messing with derelict boats because the labor costs will exceed what the boat is worth- which is probably what it was abandoned in the first place.
$100/hr seems cheap but maybe that’s a regional rate. I would have expected $150-200 range

The labor costs is the “deal breaker”. If someone has the skills, knowledge, location & tools to DIY it, then a boat like this you would probably get your ROI back and have a decent boat.

My brother bought a 36’ sailboat at auction for $10K. He put thousands into it and labor for a year. He’s now got a boat for money no where near the cost of a comparable one. But he’s retired and that was all he did until til it was done.

It takes quite some time but old l boat projects are always the most fun to diy.

the elephant in the room is that most “fixer upper” boats i see >80%) have very old or bad engines, i see way too many “ i found a 1980 Ferrari in a barn for $500 and all it needed fresh gas and a battery” rebuilds.

I’m planning on upgrading, the same items you did to this boat like speaker, cup holder, wash down pump, switches, you recommend I wet sand and buff then replace ? Im scared I’ll dirty again once I start touching the old cables and cutting fiber glass to fit new GPS.

Thank you for the great series !! Keep them coming .

And, none of this includes the fork lift and other miscellaneous equipment that most of us don't have or even have access to. I'm fairly handy, but I'm not sure I'd tackle that big a project by myself.

I have rebuilt and restored my 1976 AMF/Robalo 19' fishing boat from ground to up such as fresh closed cell foam under the floor, custom build aluminum 60 gallons fuel tank, fiberglass repair, upgrade wiring and devices, fresh upholstery cushions, fresh brand new Suzuki 140hp and rebult and upgrade boat trailer in 2 years and cost me nearly $20k. I worked very hard blood, sweat and tears on that boat n so much fun afterward debt free and still going. Everything I paid was cash only no credit card that was hard part.

Like always with renovation projects(cars, boats, what ever), if you cant do it your self and do it for fun you will never get your investment back.
Never the less, thanks for an entertaining series.👍
(I'm awaiting spring so i can get my 15", 20hp tiller back into the waters of the Swedish west coast)

Boat looks good, raccoons eat my boat, wiring seats, trolling motor, pedal both fish finders, carpet etc. About lost the full fishing season, rewiring and replacing about everything. Your videos show a lot of details, but to show the real time it takes and what is really involved to do the work is another thing. Pulling decking to get to and inspect damage, while replacing anything that is in question because "it's opened up" is truly difficult to capture unless you've done it. Again boat looks great, wish we had the resources with easy access to boating parts and yards up North. The seasonal thing makes it harder to knock things out. Keep the videos going my friend!

20 year old boat I’m guessing it might have wood for stringers and other structures below deck. Not sure when composite materials took over on Whalers. Was all this checked before that $14, 000 was put into it? Also, 12 years is a long time for that motor to be sitting unused. Surprised if that doesn’t need some work. Beautiful job refurbishing, turned out nice.

Great work, but since it has no trailer, no t top and a questionable engineer I am not sure that its worth the $42k range. This is just a quick survey of boattrader data in my area (new england). The boat looks amazing but its sometimes easy to invest took much and be way under financially. Amazing video series, I watched it everyday.

Not only would one need to do all the work oneself, but one also needs the tools and space to work in. The bottom line for me is to forget the idea of taking on a. Project boat

Might as while buy a boat with all this stuff done.

Were all the prices your cost or retail?
