Table Saw Tip - Cutting Logs Into Boards - HNB #14

You don't need a sawmill! Here's a simple table saw trick that you can use for ripping short logs down into usable lumber. Once you've split your logs into manageable chunks, all you need is a hand plane, a glue gun and some shims.

Thank you. Obvious, but I would have never thought of it.

I always screw a piece of wood (1x4) to each end of the log and a board in between those two as a straight edge against the fence. No need for all that

Nice vid, I built a sled jig to do something similar. Are you doing this with dry logs or Green logs then drying out your cut lumber.

What was the point of using the block plane to square up an edge? From one flat side you should be able to square the rest of your stock.

Glue gun comes off really easy with a drop of alcohol.

Hickory? I've been trying this with various woods, kind of creative and fun. Good video.

That really goes 1, 2 then jump to step 6.

A cleaner trick for adhering the shim: apply blue painters tape to both pieces of wood, then apply superglue to the tape, then put the board together. The painters tape comes off clean without a chisel.

Carpet tape can also work, but you super duper don’t want any exposed adhesive surfaces on the table saw.
