Extreme Budget Vegan Shopping at...Whole Foods?

I'm shopping for my BUDGET meal planning challenge at the most expensive store I know—Whole Foods! Here's how it went :)

I went shopping for the Plant Based on a Budget Meal Plan Challenge at Whole Foods Market to see how expensive an entire week of food would be when shopping organic at a notoriously pricey grocery store. I was amazed—I got my groceries for the entire week (Week 1 of the meal plan) for under forty dollars!

Thanks for watching! I post new videos every week, so don't forget to subscribe! - Michelle :)

Hey Michelle! If you're doing a lot of bulk shopping, you should try zero waste shopping. Its basically buying jars and reusable produce bags to shop. It will save so much single use plastic!

Please don't bring your own measuring items to use in the bulk bin! If a team member sees you sticking your own utensil in the bin they have to throw away the entire contents because there's no way to guarantee it was sanitized!

Ok, I'm not being negative here, but just information. I work at this type of store. Bringing your own measuring cups seems like a great idea, until you think about three things. 1.) Your measuring cups were sitting in the shopping cart. When we (our store) collect trash, we place the bags in those carts to bring to the back of the store, we DO cover the cart with another larger bag, but still, this fact is something to consider. Plus, people stick all kinds of things in these carts, from their children with mud covered shoes on... drinks and food they spill...etc. 2.) We see in your videos that you keep your home clean, but not everyone does. I'm picturing the show hoarders as I think about bringing cups from home. 3.) Some people have allergies to peanuts, gluten...etc. If you transfer  even the smallest speck of these foods to another bin, a person could get very sick.

I love zero waste shopping at whole foods! It's more affordable to bring your own packaging ^~^. I just bring jars that I reuse (pickle jars, etc.), get them weighed before shopping, and use permanent chalk marker to write the weight to tare as well as PLU codes. It makes checkout so much easier!!!

WF can be very affordable if you go with a list, use the bins and store brand, and look out for sales. I also try to go at off times so the stress of being in a crowded store doesn't encourage me to hurry and possibly make impulsive buys. I once bought only the exact amount of an ingredient I needed for a total bill $0.38 and the checker gave me a high five :D

Being plant based environmentalists we never ever use the plastic bags. Only clean washable cloth ones that we bring from home. And my Whole Foods also allows me to bring my own clean glass Mason jars for wet bulk items. I also buy the Better Than Bouillon versus the cube bullion.

More on the environmental side of things, you can also get cloth draw string bags or your own containers to bag your bulk food items. Cuts down on plastic use so that birds and marine animals don't get it in their stomachs. #GoVegans

WOW that’s awesome. You’ve opened my eyes to shopping in bulk! Still can’t believe you only spent 39 bucks at Wholefoods for a week’s worth of meals. Thank you for this!

Is that really hygienic though to put your personal utensils in? You’ve just scared me from ever going to the open bins if this is a common practice. Also, what about cross contamination for people with allergies? How are you sterilizing your tools? Also parents that have to shop and cook for a family when both parents work full time don’t have time to soak and prepare all of this dry bulk food—this isn’t because they are ‘lazy’. And fresh food is important to eat—fresh greens!
