I did a bit of searching and it appears that it is the nitric acid in the nitrocellulose in nail polish that does the damage, seeing that nitric acid is corrosive. Because don't those nails look corroded? They sure do to me. DD, interestingly, does not contain nitrocellulose. Btw, I'm not connected to DD in any way...I'm just a consumer trying to educate myself.

I’m so glad you made this video. I only use one brand of polish on my toenails, a UK brand called Barry M, and I have large white spots on my nails. I thought at one point it was fungus but it turns out after months of not wearing polish it just grew out. Two weeks of polish and I have large white patches again. Who knew polish could do so much to nails?!

Yes l was one of your subscribers that was tired of hearing about dazzle dry. However my nails and toenails are in such bad shape that l started listening to you and out of desperation l bought the dazzle dry system and even though it’s only been a few manicures l am beyond impressed! I wish i could hug you or buy you a cup of coffee! I started a new pedicurist a year and a half ago and started seeing exactly this type of surface nail damage. She is a sweetheart and i could see nothing wrong with her technique...maybe its something im doing ...of course im getting older... Finally my intuition told me to lay off the polish for awhile and im definitely seeing improvement. Who knew? I so appreciate your diligence and willingness to share. Thank you so much

Fascinating!! I actually add oil to acetone to make my own "oily remover" and it really did seem to make a noticable difference in my nail health vs. just pure acetone, when I first started doing it. However, I used to change my polish 4-5 times a week. I'm WAY too lazy for that now. As I get older, my nails are having more problems even with less polish changes. It's fascinating that the nitrocellulose is what causes the yellowing.

I quit putting polish on my toenails because at the end of one summer of having polish constantly on, I developed a complete split from top to bottom on one pinky toe, that I only discovered after removing the polish. It didn’t seem to be growing back whole either. I ended up seeing a podiatrist and he suggested putting Vick’s Vaporub on it! He said there was something in it that made it more easily absorb into the nail. I had my doubts, bit I did what he suggested and it eventually completely healed - to my relief. I may try Dazzle Dry this summer because I don’t really like to have bare toenails on display! Thanks for the, as always, informative video!!

Hi Anna! Great video as always! I have suffered of the same problem on my nails. Last year I asked my technician about it and she said the damage was happening due to the length of time I was keeping my nail polish on, which was 4+ weeks. She asked me to remove it after about 2 weeks and it worked very well. I do use OPI on most all of my pedicures.

I'm convinced. I'm currently using kerasal multi purpose nail treatment to see if it makes a difference in the nail damage/cracking/splitting i have. I have seen an increase in white spots on my nails. I had damage before using polish, but never had white spots. I'll be ordering DD soon and will be sure to use your affiliate links!

Follow up, I ordered DD using your link! I ordered the kit with ‘citrus streak’ plus two other colors ‘ cashmere taupe’ ( when short on time I like the ease of application of a sheer nude)and ‘ lavender parade’. Very interesting! Dazzle dry costs more so I was only using on my hands. BUT I do see the white patch damage on my toes and I never really thought about it! Thank you for doing the long term research.

I started using nail polish because of your videos but stopped after a few months because my nails looked damaged like in your video. It would be great if you could suggest other nail polish brands to try that might not do as much damage.
