Living with Type 1 Diabetes

The changes Siena Branch of Marlboro, New Jersey experienced when she turned 12 seemed bewildering. First, she put on 30 pounds. Then she mysteriously lost the weight in the span of a month. She was also tired all the time and couldn’t drink enough water to quench her thirst.
After a visit to her pediatrician, Siena was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. She was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC), where she received insulin to bring her glucose levels to normal as she and her shaken mother, Tricia, tried to process her diagnosis.
They began to feel more at ease when they spoke with Frank Barrows, DO, Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology at MMC’s Unterberg Children’s Hospital. Dr. Barrows has now helped Siena manage her diabetes for the past five years.

Thanks for sharing your story with us. Both my brother David and I have had Type 1 Diabetes for most of our lives, He has for about 60 years now, and I have for 56 years now. I know how difficult it can be, so keep on fighting! Have a most blessed day, my young friend. 👍

This makes me really sad. My daughter whom is 8 (9 in September) has been recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It’s a super scary, terrifying, testing moments for us parents. My baby was suffering and I had no idea. Thankful my my husband and kids. My baby is a great sister to her brother’s and they love you her so much for that. My oldest son whom is 16 and on the spectrum banged on our door 3 in the morning panicking bc he knew something was wrong with his sister. His persistence and love for his sister helped save our daughter. By the Grace of God she is doing very well now and we have our baby girl. It’s only been a week since she has been diagnosed.

I was 23 when I got ill. Never been overweight but my weight just dropped & dropped over many months. I knew something was wrong but just carried on. Funny thing was I went to Benidorm on the xmas eve & returned on new years eve. I felt ill but still went out & drank to much as us brits often do! My weight dropped below 9 stone so that was it, I went to the docs in early Jan & the doctor knew it was type 1. Off to Leicester infirmary. My sugar levels were 36 which I think is 648 in your units. I sort of laugh about it now as I didn't have 1 day off work & had that holiday in Spain just a week before. I soon got used to it & my weight shot up really quick. That diagnosis was in Jan 1984 so next month I'll have been on insulin 40 years. I'm 63 & work. I'm fine & have no long term nasties at all. For just over 2 years I've had the Libre 2 cgm & that is by far the best thing. Being honest, nothing else is any different to 1984. The constant glucose monitors are the one & only big improvement. Well done young lady for seeing the positives 😄

You look so healthy. I wish my weight will be like that. Diabetes made me lose weight unintentionally. I regained 4 kg when I started insulin but it's still too far from my original weight. Also the constant pressure every day even when you're asleep. Diabetes sucks.

just because someone is held back by this disease does not mean they're using it as a crutch or an excuse. people's lives are complicated, and even without factoring in life-changing complications it does genuinely limit you in some ways. i get that it's meant to be a motivational video, i just think we shouldn't teach our children to view burnout/depression/anxiety as shameful.

Insulin is such a powerful growth hormone. Notice weight gained before and after insulin injection.

I have been suffering for with type one for six years and is a horrible thing that nobody should ever experience and whoever created it hates people because it really hurts and it doesn’t get better and the pain in the hunger makes it worse

I just wander how USA could help to keep healthy life with t1d, is there some social program or special insurance? Cuz it's actually expensive to live with t1d.
