Fun fact: this trick can be done as Big Mario and you’ll enter a state of being small and big at the same time to the game. Once you get a Fire Flower (but don’t get mushrooms) you’ll become Small Fire Mario.

Something more to add: if you continue to play after doing this glitch, I think if I remember correctly, you turn into big Mario. If you collect a super mushroom, you revert to small mario. Collect a fire flower and bam! Small fire Mario! And what's cool is this sprite glitch works forever, as long as you don't get hit!

If you do this while you're large Mario you end up in a glitched state where the game thinks youre smaller but look as big as you were before the fight.
This is because the change of Mario becoming powerupless runs as soon as you take damage but the size change runs way later and is interrupted by the cutscene.
On the next level you'll spawn as large Mario, collect a mushroom, (mushrooms spawn in replacement of the fire flower when small, which the game thinks you are) and you become small Mario.
Collect a fire flower and you become small fire Mario. You can still throw fireballs but you remain at a one block height.
Also becaues of where the fireball spawns in relation to Mario, you can kill enemies directly above you given that you are just right under them.

This glitch can't be done on the final stage as the game resets Mario's data after completion.

You can also do this if youre big. You look small, but still have your big staus. In this state, if you get a fire flower, you look small with the fire Mario coloring, and each time you shoot a fireball, you flash to big then back to small. Its awesome
