If you unlock the blue mushroom, you can do this on a controller that doesn't have a touch sensor.

Fun fact: If Mario specifically gets 2013 lives (the game will show it as 2👑), you can unlock a playable Daisy, and you have to save Luigi from Bowser, but has a red color for some reason.
