I'm 48 yo and have been doing pistol squats for 1.5 years now. Since I have good ankle and hip mobility I could quickly progress through the move with my right leg. Left leg on the other hand took much more time to train simply because I couldn't hold my balance and felt weird as if I was leaning to sides while kneeling. What helped me was single leg 90 degree holds. Just raise one leg to make 90 degree with other one, keep both legs staraight as much as possible and try to balance and hold this position as long as you can. Then switch the legs and repeat. By the way, if you have back problems be careful practising this move because it can put some strain on sides of your back.

The original knee bulletproofer....always been just as if not more impressed with weighted pistol squats vs a heavy normal barbell squat

I learned pistol squads just by doing Bulgarian split squads with additional weight. Some day I was suddenly able to do 3 PS on the right and 1 on the left leg.

Simon, great tutorial as always! BTW I noticed you do not keep your leg at 90° when standing up. I always thought that the "full" pistol squat requires the leg to be at 90° all the way down and all the way up for extra challenge. But perhaps it is just my interpretation.

I succeeded on my first ever attempt at a pistol squat after barbell squatting (good form past parallel) for a while, I think I had 2 plates on the back squat when I attempted the pistol. Literally took me just a few tries in the first 10 minutes and I got it because I already had the raw strength from back squatting, it took my mind/body just a little to figure out the balance. Barbell squats definitely carried over to pistols for me and I never had to any progressions.

what other exercises can you do for power output. I can do 4 pistol squats in a row but then power gets completely cut off and cant raise myself from the ground even though the decent is still controlled. Been stuck here for a while

Hello Simon, I have an issue with the pistol squat. While coming up from the bottom, the toes and knee of the straight leg tend to turn outward. And that messes up my balance. How do I fix this?

I can do full, but I feel strong cracks on my knees when I get up
Is that normal? How can I prevent that?
