It's because publishers know they can make more money by selling longer books and generally won't even consider a manuscript if it's less than 150k words.

Started and finished Fourth Wing earlier this month and started Iron Flame right after. I’ll be finishing Iron Flame today since I’m at 90% rn. Then I gotta take a break and read Heir 🩵 bc my wait finally came through from Libby. Then next month I’ll finish up Onyx Storm!
