I've started my planting in last few days - 50 planted so far. :)

4 more raised beds to fill over the next week or so.

In my zone 5b area, I've found I can't plant even my hardback garlic until about a month AFTER my first frost date. When I plant it before my first frost date, it always ends up rotting in the ground. After three unsuccessful years of planting garlic, I finally had success by planting it in early December. My first frost date is October 10. Note: I only grow it in grow bags.

Hey Jeff thanks so much for the content. I've got two trays that I used for strawberries currently available. Backstory was last fall one tray got demolished by some kind of fast growing mushroom that bloomed in a week or so, followed by either a squirrel or bird digging to hide something. Over the winter, one of my cats who loves to dig dirt ripped up the other one. This spring I picked up a tray of new strawberry plants at the nursery and replanted them. Unfortunately it seems those strawberries came with some kind of soil fungus that destroyed them from the roots. When I saw not one of them was recoverable I didn't want to plant anything else in the planter trays and had to settle for a very tiny strawberry harvest this year. I just dumped all of the soil in the trash and left them out in the sun. I just told my husband lets try planting some garlic in them instead this year and here's your video.

I learnt the value of mulching last crop. Didn't think I'd need it in Scotland.. This year I will be. I need to find something to use though. I might have steal some straw :)

Excellent advice as always. Just a wee reminder though, if you are planting in southern exposures with brick walls, loads of rocks around, be careful. This creates a special environment (microcosm) that alters soil temperatures which can make frost dates not so reliable an indicator. This includes your grow bags being placed in front of a brick or cement wall. I've had to delay planting those areas by as much as 2-3 weeks after frost dates. (Southern Ontario is my location)

Here in South Florida, z 10, I had to chuckle when you said 50°! I'll be lucky to have 50° more than 4 days up till Christmas! Good luck to you Garlic Growers out there! I'll try putting some in in December. Great video, Jeff, most of your followers are well north of me! 🙂👍

My first frost came last week and it was 31°F again today when I woke up, I guess I need to get my garlic in sooner this year lol.

we're about 3 weeks from garlic planting in zone 5b. Got some nice big heads from this years crop to use as seed for next season. I can't wait to keep improving these varieties through selection

My timing must always be off. Our first frost date is September 15. But, now we are back to 40 to 50 degree F again overnight. We are in Zone 4a northern NY across from eastern Ontario, Canada. I even mulch very heavy with dry leaves. A friend of ours is a half hour from us in the same zone and he plants in October without any. problem. The same village my father lived and planted garlic. Really the only difference is that we are at a higher elevation by a little and it can be a little colder here with spring being a litter later. My father never mulched, but he planted on the south side of the house foundation. He planted a soft neck so he could braid it to hang for storage in the cellar. Our friend mulches with 6 inches of leaves in an open garden. He grows hard neck. Enjoyed as always! Thanks Jeff, take care!

Hi Jeff, thank you so much for your video on garlic, I live in zone 5 and its always a disaster to try softneck here, but hardneck grows very well. I've been gardening over 50 years, and I love your channel because I always learn something new! Happy Autumn
