So I tried to upload the code to the esp after I constructed the entire circuit, but it wouldn't let it upload. The error message said:
*esptool.FatalError: Failed to connect to ESP8266: Timed out waiting for packet header*
It had the exact same error message when i tried to use a completely different circuit earlier. Do you have an idea of what I could be doing wrong? After checking the circuitry and resetting the esp, it still says the same error message. Can you please help? Thank you!

Edit : I finally connected to esp module
I don't know what worked but here is what I did
Restarted computer
Connected the connector to other usb port
Tried to upload blank file first
Sometimes it gets uploaded, sometimes it just stuck at connecting_. Message
But code gets uploaded most of the time now

A lot of resources say that the current ESP8266 draws is higher than Arduino can give from its 3.3V pin. It may (MAY!) be enough sometimes, but at some points it may not be enough. They recommend using a 5v-3.3v converter to feed ESP8266.

Also - may sources claim that a 10 uF capacitor should be used instead of a short wire between GND and Reset to make Arduino an ISP. Strangely, I have not seen such recipes for ESP8266 programming, but for programming ATTiny chips. Do you have any comments on this?

Shouldn't you remove the ATMega chip? the ATMega should be flashed with a blank software?

For anyone getting errors while uploading to ESP8266, such as "Timed out waiting for packet header
" or "upload_mem_failed":

Firstly you don't even need the push button in order to put ESP8266 to programming mode. (You can remove that part from the breadboard.) What you need to do is:

1. Connect the GPIO0 pin to anywhere in breadboard, and connect it to ground over a 10K OHM RESISTOR.
2. Disconnect ESP8266 power supply (3.3V) and wait a few seconds.
3. Re-connect the power supply of ESP and click upload code.

This fixed the issue for me, hope this helps.

I have the same model as you (Ai Thinker, 1MB flash), so naturally I set the Flash size in Arduino IDE to 1MB, but it wouldn't upload the sketch, giving me a Timeout error. I then tried with your exact settings (4:23) and that includes selecting 512kB flash. And just like that, it worked :D Thank you for the video!
